Best Bets: Cincinnati – Week 6

The quantity of must-see games may not be numerous in Week 6, but the quality more than makes up for it.

All four GCL South teams play each other in the conference openers, and four of the top teams in the GMC vie for league supremacy in.

Here are the Best Bets for Cincinnati in Week 6:

Elder (3-2) at St. Xavier (5-0), 7 p.m. – Elder has dropped back-to-back games following a 3-0 start. The Panthers were crushed by Lakewood St. Edward on Sept. 16 and saw their late comeback fall short in Saturday’s televised 30-28 loss to Cleveland St. Ignatius. After catching just 10 passes the first four games, Danny Faillace pulled in 10 catches for 151 yards last week, which is an encouraging sign for Elder’s offense. Danny Nieman has 961 passing yards, including 307 on Saturday. Since an overtime win over Colerain in Week 2, St. Xavier’s last three games have been blowouts, as the Bombers have outscored their opponents, 111-21. QB Chase Wolf has completed 67.5 percent of his passes, and he has 10 TDs and just one interception. Matthew Fox was also strong in last week’s win, piling up 162 all-purpose yards and scoring a TD on the ground and another receiving. St. Xavier is already 1-0 in GCL South play, while this is the first 2017 league contest for Elder.

La Salle (4-1) at Moeller (3-2), 7 p.m. – La Salle took a 4-0 record into last week’s contest against Winton Woods and lost, 18-15 in a game that saw the Warriors dominate in time of possession. Cameron Porter leads the South in rushing yardage with 424. Moeller was beaten soundly by St. Xavier, 30-7 last week and is currently last in the conference as a result. Miles McBride boast a video game-esque 74.4 completion percentage for the Crusaders with 17 TDs and two interceptions. The Lancers have won three straight years vs. Moeller and blew out the Crusaders by 41 in 2016.

Fairfield (3-2) at Sycamore (4-1), Thursday, 7:05 p.m. – The two teams that tied for second in the GMC last season hold top spots in the conference standings again in 2017. Fairfield is 3-0 in league play with wins over both Lakotas and Princeton. Sycamore has one GMC loss but that was against Colerain. Strong defenses have carried both teams to their early success. Fairfield has allowed just 17 points in three league contests, and the Indians have held opponents to an average of a GMC-best 97.0 rushing yards. Sycamore is No. 1 overall in yards allowed per game (176.0) as well as passing defense (65.0 YPG). Fairfield has won three straight times vs. the Aviators, with Sycamore’s last win in the series coming in 2012. Three of the last four games between these teams have been decided by eight points or fewer.

Mason (4-1) at Colerain (3-2), 7:30 p.m. – The other big game in the GMC pits the other two top-tier defenses in the conference. Colerain is surrendering just 8.2 points per game. Mason: 9.8. The Cardinals have outscored their league foes, 121-14 after an 0-2 start. Converted linebacker Ivan Pace has rushed for 322 yards and seven touchdowns the past two weeks. The ground attack of Will Adams and Matt Sora has paced the Comets’ offense, as the tandem has combined for over 600 rushing yards and nine TDs. Though Colerain’s ridiculous league winning streak has been well documented, Mason has been one of the toughest GMC foes for the Cardinals the past two years. Colerain won by 14 over the Comets in both 2015 and 2016.

Mariemont (4-1) at Indian Hill (4-1), 7:30 p.m. – Two of the three unbeaten teams in CHL play vie to hold at least a share of the top spot. The Braves lost to CHCA by seven in Week 2 but have reeled off three straight victories since. Mariemont dropped a 42-41 decision in its opener vs. Oakwood but is riding a four-game winning streak. Cole Dein is dominating the league passing yards leaderboard with 1,177 with 11 touchdowns, and he has thrown for over 200 yards four times. Alec Vianello has been a workhorse in the Mariemont backfield, rushing the ball 93 times for a league-best 585 yards. Daniel Cascella has adding seven rushing touchdowns for the Warriors, who average 209 ground yards per game. Indian Hill has won the last two meetings.
