Lawrenceburg hangs on to beat Batesville 34-27
- Updated: September 23, 2017
Lawrenceburg, IN – The Lawrenceburg Tigers defeated the Batesville Bulldogs 34-27 Friday night at Dick Meador Stadium on Neary Memorial Field.
It was a close game throughout the contest but in the end Lawrenceburg came up with a big interception from sophomore defensive back Gavin Yoon and a massive special teams tackle by linebacker Mason Paris before Batesville could get off a punt on a bad snap.
“There’s no doubt special teams were huge in the third and fourth quarter and our defense once again when it’s time to step up they step up,” said head coach Ryan Knigga.
The Bulldogs held a 14-13 lead late in the third quarter when Yoon’s interception set up a 21 yard touchdown run by senior running back Dawson Craig.
After the ensuing kickoff Batesville was forced to punt from deep in it’s own territory and a poor snap to junior punter Nate Slavin forced him to scramble, eventually being tackled at his own 1 yard line by Paris.
Paris was credited with three sacks on the evening as well as a fumble recovery.
The Tigers pounced on the opportunity with a one yard touchdown run from senior running back Hunter Privett, his second of three touchdowns on the night to go along with 105 yards on 23 carries.
Lawrenceburg ended the game with 217 rushing yards while utilizing a formation that has the quarterback and running back right next to each other in the backfield where either one can take the snap at any time.
“We like to do a lot of misdirection, it’s a lot of diversion and we like it when the defense doesn’t know where the ball is going,” said Privett.
The Bulldogs didn’t surrender however as they would score on two consecutive touchdown runs from junior quarterback Trey Heidlage. Heidlage also had two passing touchdowns and finished the game with 182 passing yards and 78 rushing yards.
Perhaps the biggest sequence of the game occurred after the final Heidlage touchdown run that put Batesville a PAT away from tying the game.
The Tigers were offsides on the converted PAT and the Bulldogs chose to go for a two point conversion after assessing the penalty yardage.
Heidlage dropped back to pass and was brought down in the backfield by junior linebacker Jack Fette to keep the one point lead at 28-27.
Lawrenceburg would tack on an additional touchdown and then sweat out the final Batesville possession that ended in Tiger territory on an incomplete pass on fourth down inside the final minute of the game.
“You get that in the EIAC every week is a battle, but give the Tigers a lot of credit when it was time to make plays we did and sometimes you need games like this,” said Knigga.
