St. Xavier Cruises past Cathedral
- Updated: September 16, 2017
St. Xavier remained unbeaten with a 31-7 win over Cathedral Friday night at home.
Last season’s Division I state champions scored with five minutes left in the first quarter and never lost the lead. Senior Chase Wolf opened the scoring when Wolf found senior Andrew Wittrock on a 40-yard touchdown pass. He found Wittrock two more times in the game.
St. Xavier opened the lead in the second quarter when senior Donny Stock kicked a 33-yard field goal, and then Wolf hit junior Jared Kreimer on a 11-yard touchdown pass to lead Cathedral, 17-0, at halftime.
The offense continued to dominate the Cathedral defense in the third quarter when Wolf found Wittrock on two big scoring plays. The first came with just over nine minutes left on a 68-yard deep pass, and then with under four minutes left in the quarter on a 49-yard endzone strike.
The senior quarterback threw 284 yards with the four touchdown passes. His favorite receiver of the night in Wittrock only caught five passes, but three of those finished with a touchdown. He was able to average over 33 yards per catch as he finished with 166 yards.
The defense was able to hold Cathedral to only 186 yards, including 69 passing yards. They struggled against the St. Xavier defense on third down, converting only three out of 14 opportunities.
In the last two games, St. Xavier has outscored its opponents, 81-14, but now they play rivalry Moeller next Friday night on the road. Last season, St. Xavier defeated Moeller, 21-14, behind Wittrock’s two touchdown receptions. Wolf also took minimal snaps at quarterback in that game, but completed all five of his passes and threw one touchdown.
St. Xavier has defeated Moeller the last two meetings, but have only won by seven points or less.
