Mason crushes Lakota East
- Updated: October 27, 2017
On a cold, soggy night the Mason Comets crushed Lakota East, 36-0, in the regular season finale at Lakota East High School.
Mason came out of the locker room and controlled this game right from the beginning. The Comets scored 22 points in the first quarter, when senior running back Matt Sora scored two touchdowns, and Logan Dalton added a 21-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter.
Lakota East had a difficult time stopping Sora. In the first half alone, Sora rushed for 168 yards on 16 carries. He sat the second half, and Dalton received most of the carries and totaled a season-high 109 yards.
The Comets extended the lead with 26 seconds left in the first half when senior Jake Harris found a wide open Tanner Knue on a 25-yard touchdown pass. Harris replaced senior quarterback Will Adams after Adams was injured in the second quarter.
Mason senior running back Conner Garry added a touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 30-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 36-0. This was his second touchdown of the season.
There was only two passes completed in the entire game as the rain affected both teams.
This is Mason’s fourth straight win, but what is more impressive is the Mason defense has scoreless streak of 12 straight quarters. Middletown was the last team to score on this defense and that was back on October 6. Lakota East was held to 126 total yards.
Everything is coming together at the right time as Mason heads into the state playoffs. The win secured Mason a spot in the Division I playoffs as the Comets entered the week as the fifth ranked team in Region 4.
Lakota East finished the season losing three of its last four games. The Thunderhawks opened the season 5-1, but a tough stretch in October will keep them out of the playoffs.
