Anderson advances with dominant performance
- Updated: November 4, 2017
CINCINNATI, ohio – It didn’t take long for Anderson to kick it into gear and once they got going the never let the foot off the gas. The Redskins avenged last year’s heartbreaking 41-35 loss to Troy in the first round of the playoffs in grandiose fashion. It was the first postseason win for the program since 2009. That year the Anderson fell to Elder in the Division I Region 4 championship game at Nippert Stadium.
The Redskins built a 20-0 lead 9:01 into the game. The barrage was fueled by senior quarterback Jay Volpenhein who had touchdown runs of 10 and 35 yards and a scoring toss to classmate Austin Watt in the first quarter. Volpenhein would finish with 282 yards passing, 110 yards rushing, had the two scores on the ground and two touchdown passes to Watt. It was the fourth straight 100 yard rushing game and seventh of the season for Volpenhein.
Watt raised his touchdown catch total to 10. It was his third game in the last five where he has had multiple touchdown receptions. Kyle Blaha had 10 catches for 116 yards to lead the Redskins in both categories.
As good as the offense was the Anderson defense may have been even better. The Redskins recorded their second straight shutout and fourth of the year. They held Troy to 200 yards of total offense on 56 snaps. The Trojans were led by junior Jayden Culp-Bishop who ran for 115 yards on 26 carries.
The victory sets up a Division II, Region 8 semifinal contest against former FAVC Buckeye foes as Winton Woods advanced as well. The winner will play in its first regional championship since ’09.
