St. Xavier Rolls Lakota West in Crosstown Showdown
- Updated: August 24, 2018
St. Xavier defeats Lakota West, 34-0, at Paul Brown Stadium Friday night in the Crosstown Showdown.
The Bombers controlled this game from the opening kickoff. St. Xavier jumped out to a quick 20-point lead in the first quarter. Junior Wyatt Hudepohl had a nine-yard quarterback keeper into the endzone with just under two minutes into the game. The Bombers are coming off an 11-2 season a year ago and a state championship a year prior.
Marshall Lang scored the Bombers second touchdown on a 11-yard pass from Hudepohl. The drive continued after St. Xavier went for it on fourth down in Lakota West territory.
After taking a 13-0 lead, Nathan Stockman returned an interception 29 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 20 points.
The Bombers did not score again until five minutes left in the third quarter when Chris Payne rushed for a nine-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 27-0.
St. Xavier had doubts at quarterback heading into the season after Chase Wolf graduated and headed to the University of Wisconsin. The questions were answered as Hudepohl threw for 145 yards and 29 rushing yards before senior Jared Kreimer took over in the third quarter. Kreimer broke a run for a 28-yard touchdown run with just under a minute left in the third quarter.
The Bombers had 321 total yards, which 131 of those yards were rushing. Six Bombers contributed to the 131 yards. The Bombers will look to run the ball more this season compared to previous seasons.
Lakota West struggled to get the offense going under interim head coach Jeff Wadl. This was Wadl’s first game since replacing Larry Cox.
Senior Manny Pastoriza only completed five passes on 14 attempts. He finished with 60 yards passing. Senior Deontai Christon caught two passes for 31 yards.
This was the first time these two schools met since the 2006 playoffs when the Bombers defeated Lakota West, 44-3.
Lakota West will visit Centerville (0-1) next Friday night. Centerville lost to Fairfield in their season opener. St. Xavier will host Colerain, who is coming off a win over La Salle.
