Edgewood defeats Harrison in SWOC battle
- Updated: September 22, 2018
HARRISON, OHIO – The Edgewood Cougars and Harrison Wildcats traded blows throughout the night, resulting in six lead changes, but it was Edgewood who claimed victory in this GWOC matchup.
The Cougars scored first with 6:35 to go on a Wade Phillips 7-yard touchdown run, which was followed by a Connor Kinnett 1-yard touchdown rush to pull Harrison even.
Phillips, a senior, scored again on a 25-yard pass from fellow senior Corbin Craft, which was then overshadowed by a Cam Hering 82-yard touchdown run. The run was Hering’s longest of his sophomore year, and tied the game once again, this time at 14-14.
Harrison took the lead on a 7-yard pass from Connor Kinnett to CJ Young with 2:56 left in the first half, only to be answered by a 33-yard rushing touchdown from Edgewood’s Elijah Williams 84 seconds later.
Tied 21-21 at halftime, no team looked like it was planning to pull away from the other. Possession was split, with Edgewood holding onto the ball for 12:36 and running 27 plays, and Harrison in control for 11:24 while running 24 plays.
Out of halftime, Harrison struck first on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Kinnett to Jace Fette.
Soon after, Williams ran in another score for Edgewood from 5-yards out, bringing the score even at 28.
Edgewood took the lead back at the 9:51 mark of the fourth quarter when Phillips, on a third and 14 from his own side of the field, was able to slip by the defense on a pitch and catch that went for a 79-yard score on what seemed to be the play of the night.
Exactly three minutes later though, Harrison kept it interesting on another Kinnett 1-yard score.
With just 1:59 left in the game, Phillips impressed again by pounding out 3-yards for the touchdown, placing the Cougars in good position to take home the win.
With the Wildcats still holding on to hope in the final minutes, it was Justin Hiltbrand of Edgewood who stopped Harrison from driving. He recorded a fourth down interception for his team and sealed the victory.
Phillips finished with 178 yards on 23 rushes while scoring twice on the ground and twice by receiving, in which he had 33 yards on 2 receptions.
Williams also impressed for the Cougars, recording 129 yards on 19 rushes, 104 yards on two receptions, and mathced Phillips’ two touchdowns each on the ground and through the air.
Kinnett lead the way for Harrison in the loss, throwing for 228 yards on 18/28 throwing with two passing touchdowns, and two rushing touchdowns on 15 attempts for 27 yards.
With the win, Edgewood is currently tied for first place in the SWOC with Little Miami (5-0, 2-0).
