The wait is over, Wyoming wins second title

CANTON, Ohio – Wyoming (15-0) topped off a perfect season with its second state title in school history and first since 1977. The Cowboys defense held a Girard offense that was averaging 45.1 points a game and had scored at least 32 points in every contest to just 14. It was the 15th time this season that Wyoming held an opponent to 17 points or less.

The stage wasn’t too big for Wyoming junior quarterback Evan Prater. The 2018 OPSWA Ohio Division IV Offensive Player of the Year was sensational, running for a career high 242 yards, throwing for another 149 yards and accounting for five touchdowns (three rush, two pass). His final numbers on the year were 2,182 yards passing, 1,788 yards rushing with 32 touchdowns on the ground, 28 more through the air. He stole the show.

On the receiving end of those touchdown tosses from Prater was Joey Edmonds, “The gamer.” Edmonds had four receptions for 94 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the first half of the victory. The senior caught 54 balls (for 1,006 yards) this year of which 19 went for scores. He also led the team with five picks.

As for Edmonds and his senior classmates, Eli Cupp, Moe Mitchell, Sam Pendry, Luke Palmer, Tyler McIlvain, Perry McMichen, Hasan Black, Pierson Rogers, James Smith, Lue Erny, Jared Hall, and Shep Marty they will go down as the winningest group the program has ever seen. They went a combined 39-2 over their final three seasons.
