Preview: CHCA at McNicholas
- Updated: August 31, 2021
The Blitz 5 Comeback Tour heads east this week for a non-conference clash between two teams headed in opposite directions. There is a youth movement going on at CHCA. McNicholas is reaping the benefits from having a group of experienced upperclassmen that have played a ton of varsity snaps. Despite the disparities expect a proud program like CHCA to give its best showing in this dogfight.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: CHCA seniors Matthew Rebhun, Morgan Sacay and Keyshawn Walker need to step up and show the inexperienced players the way to get it done on Friday nights. Their attitudes will go a long way in dictating the way this team plays. Sophomore quarterback Logan Mullert must realize he doesn’t need to do everything and rely more on the weapons that surround him.
The McNicholas offense is paced by junior Ty Snyder, who is averaging 103.5 yards and two touchdowns per game rushing. Senior Pierce Taylor has slid into the role as the Rockets’ starting quarterback seamlessly. He has accounted for 325 yards of total offense (167 rushing, 158 passing) and four touchdowns (two rushing, two passing) in two games. Junior Ben Bobo has 10 receptions for 112 yards and two scores.
The Rockets are led on defense by senior linebackers Jack Suttles, Colin Fix and Brogan Dolan. Suttles and Dolan each have more than 100 total tackles in their careers. Fix is also averaging 40.0 yards per punt for the special teams.
TEAM TRENDS: CHCA has yet to score a point this season. The Eagles are in jeopardy of snapping a string of 10 consecutive playoff appearances. Through two weeks CHCA has only been able to muster 19 yards rushing on 49 carries. They have just 79 yards of total offense. This is the first time that the Eagles have started 0-2 since 2006. The last time they went 0-3 out of the gate was in 2000, the program’s fourth year of existence.
This is the third straight year that McNicholas has started 2-0. The Rockets are giving up just 13.5 points per game. They have allowed 14 points or fewer seven times in their last nine contests dating back to last season.
HEAD COACHES:
CHCA: KC Woods (6-4 at CHCA, second year, 51-23 overall, seventh year)
McNicholas: Mike Orlando (54-51 at McNicholas, 11th year; 54-51 overall)
PLAYOFF HISTORY:
CHCA (16 appearances, 17-16 overall) – 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014 (Regional champions), 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2008, 2007, 2005 (State runner-up), 2003, 2002
McNICHOLAS (12 appearances, 10-12) – 2020, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2010 (Regional Champion), 2003, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1997, 1985, 1984 (State Runner-up)
CHCA’S KEYS TO VICTORY: The Eagles must find a way to put points on the board and that includes in unconventional ways if they are to win this affair. There is no margin for error, so taking care of the football is a top priority.
McNICHOLAS’ KEYS TO VICTORY: Play tenacious defense like they have in the first two games and the Rockets will come out on top. Stop the run, get off the field quickly then sit back and enjoy watching teammates on offense do their thing.
Prediction: McNICHOLAS 31, CHCA 6
