Cincinnati Round-Up: Flowers runs over Sycamore
- Updated: September 10, 2021
Conference play entered its second week across the Tri-State, including a trio of Blitz5 Top 25 games involving teams from the Greater Miami Conference and the Eastern Cincinnati Conference.
NO. 9 KINGS 35, NO. 20 ANDERSON 28
Two of the top teams in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference battled each other in a back-and-forth game, but the Kings Knights were too much for the Anderson Raptors, moving to a tie into first place in the conference after the 35-28 win.
Anderson had the early momentum in the game after Evan Upchurch ran into the end zone for a short two-yard run.
It didn’t take long for the Raptors to extend their lead. On the next defensive series, Anderson’s Jack Ledford picked off Knights quarterback Will Kocher to give the Raptors an early 14-0 lead.
The Knights began clawing back when Kocher found Andy Bauman for the score, cutting the lead in half.
Raptors quarterback Griffin Scalf extended the Anderson lead to 21-7 when he connected with Santos Alvarez with a 69-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.
Kocher tied it up right before the half with back-to-back scoring tosses, one to Michael Mussari and one to Jake Cameron.
After Kings took its first lead of the game in the third quarter on a Kocher to Mussari connection, the Raptors tied it up on a tough three-yard run by Brodey Berg.
Kocher responded in the fourth quarter on a game-deciding 63-yard pass to Cameron to give the Knights the 35-28 win.
Kocher finished the game with 434 yards passing and five touchdowns while Scalf ended the game with 346 yards and a touchdown.
Kings (4-0) will stay at home next week to take on Walnut Hills. Anderson (2-2) will return home to take on the Lebanon Warriors.
NO. 7 COLERAIN 33, NO. 13 SYCAMORE 13
Another strong performance by star Colerain running back M.J. Flowers led the Cardinals to a 33-13 win over Sycamore to get Colerain’s record back to .500 on the season.
The Cardinals defense struck the scoreboard first on a flashy scoop and score by Corey Myrick, who returned the fumble 89 yards to put Colerain up 7-0.
Flowers dazzled on the next scoring drive, rushing for a 57-yard touchdown in the waning minutes of the first quarter. Colerain went up 20-0 later in the first half when Flowers scored from 52 yards out.
After an Aviators touchdown to end the first half, Flowers once again traveled far for six points, a 62-yard rushing score to extend the lead to 27-7. Zay Jennings capped off the Cardinals scoring with a 57-yard scoring run of his own.
Colerain (2-2) returns home next to take on the Oak Hills Highlanders, while Sycamore (2-2) will host the Middletown Middies.
NO. 10 LAKOTA EAST 54, NO. 8 HAMILTON 21
A Blitz5 Top 25 Top 10 matchup featured the Lakota East Thunderhawks and the Hamilton Big Blue Friday night with the Thunderhawks coming out on top 54-21 behind 259 yards total team rushing.
Hamilton quarterback Kerry Ware got the scoring started with a 17-yard pass to Breeon Ishmail with under a minute left in the first quarter.
The Thunderhawks responded with 20 unanswered points, starting with a 45-yard pass from TJ Kathman to Kyle Poppe. That was followed up with a Charlie Kenrich three-yard run, ending with a Kathman 33-yard scoring pass to Nick Rabin.
After a 39-yard scoring run for Hamilton’s Kaleb Johnson, Lakota East went on another 20-0 run. Poppe (receiving) and Rabin each found the end one for a second time amid the run while Eric Davis capped it off with a three-yard run.
The Big Blue scored its third touchdown on an Elijah Givens three-yard scamper. However, the Thunderhawks had to have the last say, scoring another two touchdowns before the final horn sounded on the Lakota East win.
Kathman led the Thunderhawks rushing attack with 76 yards on eight carries, followed by Eric Davis with 69 yards on 11 carries and Charlie Kenrich with 46 yards on five carries.
Lakota East (3-1) will next travel to Dwire Field next week to take on Mason, while Hamilton (1-1) will host its first game of the season to face Lakota West.
