NKY Round-Up: Hergott dominates in Beechwood win
- Updated: September 10, 2021
Several teams in the Blitz5 Top 25 saw action Friday night in Northern Kentucky, including an entertaining interstate matchup and the first points scored against Beechwood.
NO. 18 BEECHWOOD 49, SIMON KENTON 21
The Blitz5 Top 25 No. 18 Beechwood Tigers finally gave up their first points of the season on Friday night against the Simon Kenton Pioneers, but still laid 49 on the Pioneers, thanks to the performance of star quarterback Cameron Hergott.
Hergott continued his football dominance, accounting for four touchdowns for Beechwood.
Hergott found the end zone early in the first quarter on a 22-yard quarterback scamper. Another Hergott rush put the Tigers up 14-0 early.
Beechwood running back Avery Courtney scored his sixth touchdown of the year on a 12-yard rush to extend the Tiger lead.
Hergott found the endzone for the third time on an eight-yard run late in the second quarter. The Pioneers became the first team to score on the Tigers just before the half, but the halftime score heavily favored Beechwood 28-7
Eastern Kentucky-commit Hergott picked up in the second half where he left off in the first, running for a fourth rushing touchdown from 28 yards.
Rushing touchdowns by Mitchell Berger and Courtney capped off the scoring for the Tigers.
Pioneers quarterback Chase Crone accounted for all of Simon Kenton’s touchdowns with a trio of rushing scores.
This was the third consecutive game Beechwood put 49 points on the scoreboard. The Tigers have outscored their opponents 181-21 in the first four games of the season.
Next week, Beechwood (4-0) will return home to face Class 5A powerhouse Covington Catholic, while Simon Kenton (0-4) will return to the gridiron when they travel to Connersville in two weeks.

NO. 14 COVINGTON CATHOLIC 24, DIXIE HEIGHTS 8
After a close loss to Lexington Catholic last week, the Covington Catholic Colonels successfully rebounded and took care of the Dixie Heights Colonels 24-8.
Covington Catholic’s momentum on defense began early in the first game when Aiden Jones recovered a Dixie Heights fumble in Dixie Heights territory. However, the drive stalled and CovCath had to settle for a 28-yard field goal by Eli Nally.
Later in the quarter, CovCath quarterback Adam Holtz connected with John Lenihan for a 63-yard score to give the Colonels from Park Hills a 10-0 lead.
The 10-point lead lasted until the fourth quarter when CovCath extended it to 17-0 when a 40-yard Brayden Collins run set up a short touchdown rushing touchdown by Nick Darpel.
Collins found the end zone for himself later in the quarter to end the scoring for CovCath. Dixie Heights responded by getting on the scoreboard for the first time of the night on a 91-yard kickoff return by Aumad Edwards. A two-point conversion sent the eventual final score to 24-8 in favor of Covington Catholic.
The schedule doesn’t get any easier for Covington Catholic as the Colonels will travel to the other side of I-75 to take on the undefeated Beechwood Tigers next week. Dixie Heights will rest up on a bye week before hosting Highlands on Sept. 24.
NO. 25 MCNICHOLAS 27, NO. 19 HIGHLANDS 21
Coming off their first 3-0 start since the 2014 season, the Highlands Bluebirds failed to keep the momentum going against the McNicholas Rockets, crossing the river for a 27-21 loss in Mt. Washington.
Bluebirds quarterback Charlie Noon gave Highlands their first lead of the game on a 33-yard touchdown pass to Clayton Lloyd.
The Rockets found an answer to nearly every Bluebirds score. Quarterback Pierce Taylor found the end zone on a sneak to tie the game at 7-7 early in the game.
After another Bluebirds score, Wyatt Gear found an opening in the Highlands defense for a long scoring run to give the Rockets momentum. A Ty Snyder rushing score gave the Rockets a lead in the second half, a lead they would not lose, knocking off a northern Kentucky powerhouse.
Highlands (3-1) will head home to take on Ryle while McNick (4-0) will hope to continue its undefeated season going against Roger Bacon.
