Cincinnati Round-Up: Week 7

With the calendar flipping to October, the seeding for the OHSAA expanded playoffs are beginning to take form. With that comes upsets and Friday night saw its fair share of upsets in the Greater Cincinnati area.

LOUISVILLE TRINITY 33, NO. 1 ST. XAVIER 32
For the first six weeks of the 2021 season, the St. Xavier Bombers looked unstoppable. That streak came to an end Friday night after Louisville Trinity traveled to RDI Stadium and upset the Bombers 33-32.

The game went back-and-forth for much of the game. Charles Kellom got the Bombers on the board first with a seven-yard scoring run. Trinity responded with a 26-yard run by Brady Willis and a 24-yard field goal by Kell McLaughlin to go up 10-7 in the second quarter.

An exchange of field goals going into the half gave Trinity a 13-10 advantage at the midway point.

Brogan McCaughey put the Bombers back in front on a six-yard scoring rush of his own, which prompted Trinity to come back with another McLaughlin field goal and a five-yard score by Armon Tucker to go ahead 23-17 going into the final frame.

After another McLaughlin field goal, St. Xavier got within two points when McCaughey found Kellom for a long 65-yard scoring pass. Another Kellom rushing touchdown briefly gave the Bombers another lead before Armon Tucker put a nail in the coffin with a short run to give Trinity the final lead with under a minute left.

St. Xavier (6-1, 2-0 in GCL South) will go back to GCL South action next week when the Bombers face Division II powerhouse La Salle Lancers.

NO. 7 LAKOTA EAST 7, NO. 6 COLERAIN 6
After 22 years of being dominated by the Colerain Cardinals, the Lakota East Thunderhawks knocked off the Cardinals in a low-scoring affair, 7-6, at Cardinal Stadium.

The low-scoring affair was all defense in the first half. Neither offense was able to gain momentum, leading to a scoreless game at halftime.

Lakota East finally struck first when Charlie Kenrich found the end zone on a short two-yard scamper. The extra point by Trevor Hoffman turned out to be the difference in the game, giving the Thunderhawks a 7-0 lead in the third quarter.

The Cardinals finally got on the board in the fourth quarter when star running back MJ Flowers broke through for a three-yard scoring run. However, the Thunderhawks got a hand on the ball, blocking the extra point and effectively winning the game for Lakota East.

Lakota East (6-1, 5-0 in GMC) will look to win its sixth straight conference game next week when the Thunderhawks take on Oak Hills on the road. Colerain

ANDERSON 28, NO. 10 WINTON WOODS 21
The Eastern Cincinnati Conference was not immune to upsets, as the Anderson Raptors knocked off the No. 10 Winton Woods 28-21 to rise up the rankings in the conference with three weeks to go.

Winton Woods took an early 7-3 lead over Anderson when Tyrek Spikes found the end zone from nine yards out. That would begin an avalanche of lead changes throughout the game.

Anderson kicked off the second quarter with a 99-yard drive that concluded with a Griffin Scalf pass to Brody Foley for a six-yard touchdown pass. The Raptors took the 10-7 lead into the half.

The Warriors came out in the third quarter on fire, taking back the lead on a 48-yard touchdown catch by Antonio Turner Jr. However, a 29-yard field goal by Hayden Brooke put the Raptors ahead 14-13 on their next drive.

In the fourth quarter, a Winton Woods interception set up a 26-yard scoring carry for Spikes for the last score the Warriors would execute.

The rest of the game was all Raptors. Scalf connected twice in the end zone in the final minutes, one to Santos Alvarez and the other to Foley to give the Raptors the 28-21 win.

Anderson (5-2, 4-1 in ECC) will hit the road next week to take on the Milford Eagles while Winton Woods (4-3, 3-2 in ECC) will go back out to Anderson Township for a second week in a row to face the Turpin Spartans.
