Mason edges out Sycamore
- Updated: October 1, 2021
CINCINNATI, Ohio – After starting 2-4 for the first time since 2013, the Mason Comets are gaining momentum in the 2021 season after knocking off Greater Miami Conference foe Sycamore Aviators 43-40 Friday night.
Michael Molnar got the momentum started in the first quarter for the Comets, scoring on a five-yard run to go up 7-0.
Despite losing the game, William Ingle starred for the Aviators, getting his career night started on a one-yard run to tie the game up after a Bennett Hogan extra point. Ingle would go on to score four more touchdowns on the ground.
Molner found the end one again which was followed up by a Larson Brown pass to Bryant Violand, putting Mason up by two touchdowns. Ingle got the game a little closer back-to-back rushing scores just before the half to cut the Comet lead to one going into the half.
The Comets came out of the locker room firing with Molnar taking in a pass from Brown to go back up by one touchdown. However, the Aviators would take its first lead of the game on back-to-back long scoring runs: a 57-yard run by Ingle and 63-yard run by Rashid Harris.
Brown connected with Ben Fosnot for an 18-yard passing score to tilt the lead back the Comets way. That didn’t last long, however, as Ingle ran into the end zone from five yards out to give Sycamore a late 39-33 lead.
With two minutes left, Brown found Molnar in the end zone for the final score of the game, giving Mason its third win of the season.
Brown led the Comets, finishing with 230 yards through the air and four touchdowns. Ingle had a stellar night in a losing night for the Aviators, rushing for 348 yards and five touchdowns, including a 79-yard run.
