NKY Round-Up: Down to one
- Updated: November 19, 2021
When the night started we had seven Northern Kentucky teams fighting for their shot at a regional title. Unfortunately, only one of them was able to pull off the feat and move to the final four of the KHSAA playoffs.
CLASS 2A
BEECHWOOD 50, WALTON-VERONA 6
Noel Rash’s Tigers are the only remaining Northern Kentucky team standing after Friday night’s action. No matter the outcome of their game versus Walton-Verona, we knew we would have at least one team from the area moving on and there was no doubt in this contest.
Senior Cam Hergott ran for four touchdowns and threw for two more to help Beechwood open up a 42-0 first-half lead and there wasn’t much else to do from there. The defense stifled the Bearcats all night long and now have held seven straight opponents to single digits.
With the win, Beechwood grabbed its eighth straight regional title. They’ll host arch nemesis Mayfield next week with a trip to the state championship on the line.
CLASS 5A
WOODFORD COUNTY 28, COVINGTON CATHOLIC 14
The Yellow Jackets offense was too much for the Colonels to handle as CovCath hit the road for a showdown in Woodford County.
The Colonels got down 14-0, but battled back after Zion Mason returned the ensuing kickoff for a TD to cut it to 14-7 at the half.
Jacob Jackson punched in a 1-yard TD run for the home team on their first second-half possession and things started to get away for CovCath from there and the Yellow Jackets went up three scores midway through the fourth quarter.
Preston Agee added a 76-yard TD strike to Adam Holtz with a 1:21 left to make it look respectable, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Colonels season came to an end.
CLASS 6A
Louisville Trinity 38, Ryle 18
CLASS 4A
Boyle County 51, Scott 14
CLASS A
Russellville 21, Newport Central Catholic 0
Raceland 48, Bishop Brossart 7
