Winton Woods tops Hoban for second title

CANTON, Ohio – Winton Woods used its superior speed on both sides of the ball as they zipped past Archbishop Hoban to win the schools second state championship. The Warriors won their first title in 2009. They lost to Hoban in the finale in 2017.

It looked like Winton Woods was literally going to run away from the Knights after a pair seven play touchdown drives of 70 and 80 yards in the second quarter that led to 14-3 halftime lead.
Seniors Buddy Ellery and TyRek Spikes scored on short runs for the Warriors.

HIGHLIGHTS: Buddy Ellery TD run
HIGHLIGHTS: TyRek Spikes TD run

On the first play from scrimmage after intermission Hoban’s Caleb Kepler forced and recovered a Spikes fumble. He took this 22 yards for six points. The Knights had cut the advantage to four points.

It took Winton Woods just 100 seconds to match the points. KC Spears rambled 53 yards for a touchdown. It capped off a four play 80-yard drive. It was also the final score of the game just 1:40 seconds into the third quarter. The Warriors defense would shine the rest of the way out. Hoban was held to under 100 yards of total offense in each half and could not muster a touchdown.

Despite three fumbles the Winton Woods rushing attack was the star with 288 yard and three touchdowns. Spikes led the way with 153 yards, Ellery had 87 yards and Spears finished with 54 yards. Spikes was sensational in the playoffs with 1,173 yards and 11 touchdowns in six games.
