TSF 2021 Kentucky OPOY Finalists

There are seven finalists for the 2021 TriState Football Kentucky Offensive Player of the Year including last year’s winner, Cam Hergott. Five nominee’s are seniors. Tyson Beach and Mitch Berger are the only underclassmen. This is the second nomination for Hergott, Berger (finalist on defense in 2020), Cole Wallace and Braxten Newborn.
The members of the All-TSF Teams, the TSF Teams of the Year, Players of the Year and finalists from Indiana, Dayton, Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati as well as the Mella Windows Players of the Week will be recognized at the TriState Football Year In Review Awards Show on Monday, February 21st, 2022 at the Holy Grail-Banks – RSVP 2021 TSF Year In Review Show
Here is a look at our finalists:
Mitch Berger (Beechwood) – First Team All-NKY performer on both sides of the ball (for a second straight year). Has a knack for getting into the end zone. Berger hit paydirt 17 times (10 rush, seven rec) while racking up 1,068 yards from scrimmage (508 rush, 560 rec) as a junior. Berger is also a standout linebacker for the state champion Tigers.
Tyson Beach (Walton-Verona) – Class 2A District 5 POY. It was a coming out party or this sophomore who ran for 1,287 yards, had 14 receptions for 202 yards, found the end zone 22 times (17 rush, five rec). He also had two interceptions on defense.
Alex Castrucci (Conner) – Class 5A District 5 POY and NKY Top 26. An athlete who you just can’t take off the field. Castrucci can beat you with his arm, legs or head. He ran for 1,070 yards, threw for 899 yards, and accounted for 22 touchdowns (18 pass, four rush) for the Cougars offense. Defensively, he tallied 49 total tackles, had an interception, and returned a fumble for a touchdown. Castrucci has offers from Valparaiso and Georgetown College.
Cam Hergott (Beechwood) – Courier-Journal Second Team All-Kentucky, Class 2A State Championship Game MVP (for a third time), Class 2A District 6 POY and First Team All-NKY (for a third time). The second-year senior led Beechwood (15-0) to a perfect season, its second straight state title, fifth in the last six years (third with Hergott at QB) and 16th in program history. Hergott amassed 4,134 yards of total offense (2,323 pass, 1,811 rush) and accounted for 61 touchdowns (32 pass, 29 rush). His 8,537 career yards passing are 26th most in Kentucky history. Hergott’s 97 career touchdown passes are 29th in Kentucky history. He has signed with Eastern Kentucky.
Logan Landers (Dixie Heights) – Second Team All-NKY. Rounded out his game to make himself one of the area’s elite offensive players this past fall. Landers accrued 2,672 yards of total offense (1,850 pass, 822 rush) and accounted for 29 touchdowns (15 pass, 12 rush). He threw for 5,171 yards, ran for 1,490 yards with 36 passing touchdowns and 19 rushing scores in his career. Landers has an offer from Dayton.
Braxten Newborn (Ludlow) – Class 1A District 4 POY and First Team All-NKY (for a second straight year). A workhorse on both sides of the ball. Newborn ran for 1,229 yards, had 10 receptions for 144 yards and 14 touchdowns. On defense, he racked up 101 total tackles. He finishes his career with 3,896 yards rushing, 49 rushing touchdowns, two receiving touchdowns, 271 total tackles, six sacks, 10.0 tackles for losses, three fumble recoveries and one interception. Newborn has an offer from Wilmington
Cole Wallace (Rowan County) – Class 4A District 6 POY, EKC OPOY and First Team All-EKC. One incredibly productive back, finishing with 1,300-plus yards rushing in each of the last four seasons. Wallace, who reclassified and came back for a second senior campaign and ran for 1,795 yards with 18 touchdowns (17 rush). He also had 49 total tackles, a sack, a fumble recovery, and an interception on defense. Wallace ran for 6,516 yards, had 77 touchdowns (74 rush), reeled in 34 receptions for 326 yards, had 184 total tackles, six sacks, 20.0 tackles for losses, two fumble recoveries and one interception in a Vikings uniform. He has offers from Wofford (PWO), Morehead State and Union.
