NKY Round-Up: CovCath silenced by Elder

The high school football season kicked off on Friday across the Bluegrass State. Here’s a look at some of Northern Kentucky’s top action.

NO. 9 ELDER 42, NO. 17 COVINGTON CATHOLIC 21

Elder dominated early and often Friday night en route to a convincing 42-21 victory over host Covington Catholic.

The Panthers jumped out to a 28-0 lead and never looked back against the Colonels. Ben Schoster got things started with a four yard rushing touchdown late in the first quarter.

Luke Flowers continued the onslaught with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter as Elder stretched their lead to 21-0. Flowers finished the night with 84 yards on the ground to pace the rushing attack.

The Panthers defense was stout as they were able to hold CovCath to just seven points through three quarters.

The Colonels could not capitalize on some of their positive drives and Elder took advantage by building a sizable lead that they could not overcome.

Elder (1-0) will head home next week for a matchup with Pickerington Central as CovCath (0-1) will travel to Pikeville

CAMPBELL COUNTY 28, NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 18

Campbell County dominated time of possession en route to a 28-18 victory over Newport Central Catholic.

The Camels were led by Nathan Smith who proved tough to stop for the Thoroughbreds. Smith was 15-27 and 141 yards through the air. He also carried the ball 24 times for 191 yards and three touchdowns.

After jumping out to a 13-0 lead, NewCath responded with a pair of scores by Kolton Smith and Demetrick Welch Jr.  to cut the lead to 13-12.

Nathan Smith scored his second touchdown to again extend the lead to 20-12 and the Camels would not relinquish it the rest of the way.

HOLY CROSS 48, BELLEVUE 0

The Indians scored 21 first-quarter points and never looked back in their season-opening win over Bellevue as they dominated on both sides of the ball.

Holy Cross limited Bellevue to 12 yards of total offense while cruising to a 34-0 halftime lead. Quarterback Landyn Phillips led the charge with 55 yards and a score on 4-of-5 passing and an additional 78 yards and another TD on eight carries.

The Indians’ defense also came away with three turnovers in the contest as Errick Davis, Donovan Ambroslo and Javier Ward all picked up a Tigers’ pass.
