NKY Round-Up: Beechwood wins big
- Updated: September 9, 2022
It was an exciting night in Northern Kentucky high school football as several teams got big wins as we head to the midway point of the season.
NO. 25 BEECHWOOD 30, NO. 22 SIMON KENTON 7
Beechwood won a physical game going away against Simon Kenton. Both the Tigers and Pioneers wanted to do their work on the ground and the Tigers proved to do it the best. The Tigers rushed for 213 yards on the ground to get a convincing win.
Mitchell Berger paced the ground game for the Tigers. He had 17 carries for 93 yards and 2 touchdowns. He was flanked by Landon Aylor’s 69 rushing yards and his own 2 touchdowns.
The Tigers jumped out to a strong start and never seemed to look back. Berger pinned the Pioneers at the 1-yard line with a great punt. The Tigers defense would come up with a safety and Berger would score a quick touchdown from 22 yards out for an early 9-0 lead.
Aylor would add his two scores before Berger scored once again and the lead was 30-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Pioneers were able to avoid the shutout when Chase Williams scored on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Tucker Ober with just 14 seconds remaining in the game. Simon Kenton was playing without starting quarterback Chase Crone, who suffered an injury in last week’s contest.
NO. 19 COVINGTON CATHOLIC 47, DIXIE HEIGHTS 14
CovCath raced out to a 35-9 halftime lead and never looked back as it ran away from Dixie Heights 47-14. A balanced attack helped the Colonels to victory in front of a nice crowd.
Zaccary Roberts went 13-18 for 197 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead his team to victory. The quarterback hooked up with wideout Willie Rodriguez for three touchdown passes. Rodriguez finished with 82 yards receiving on the night.
The Colonels were dominant in about every facet of the game. They outgained Dixie Heights 357-174, 241 of those yards through the air compared to only 74 for Dixie Heights. They also dominated time of possession by almost 21 minutes.
Owen Leen added two scores on the ground for Covington Catholic in the victory.
COOPER 28, CAMPBELL COUNTY 26
Cooper and Campbell County played about as close of a game as you can play Friday night. Campbell County outgained Cooper on the ground 183-81. Cooper returned the favor through the air by out-gaining Campbell County 357-137.
Cam O’Hara was 19-27 for 357 yards passing and three touchdowns against one interception to help lift the Jaguars to victory. O’Hara was able to spread the wealth. Austin Alexander caught eight passes for 134 yards and a touchdown, Isaiah Johnson had 3 catches for 99 yards and a touchdown, and Jayce Hotchkiss also had 3 catches for 95 yards and a touchdown.
Campbell County did their work on the ground as both Joseph Amato and Jaiden Combs both rushed for over 60 yards. Combs added a touchdown as did Keegan Hill.
Hill tossed two touchdown passes, both to wideout Aiden Bauwens who caught 3 balls for 102 yards in the losing effort.
