NKY Round-Up: Colonels put defense on display
- Updated: September 23, 2022
There were big winners in week six in Northern Kentucky as several teams continued their winning ways. Some Bulldogs put up some big numbers and CovCath used a strong defensive effort to get in the win column.
NO.13 COVINGTON CATHOLIC 14, COOPER 7
Defense was on display for Covington Catholic on Friday night. The Colonels held Cooper to just 123 yards of offense in the close victory. This included only giving up four yards rushing. Tate Kruer led the defensive effort with six tackles.
Cooper’s lone score came on an Austin Alexander reception from quarterback Cam O’Hara. O’hara was 12-19 for 119 yards and a touchdown on the night. Alexander hauled in six receptions for 40 yards to go with the touchdown.
Offensively, Covington Catholic did just enough to get the victory and were again led by quarterback Evan Pitzer. Pitzer threw for 183 yards and two touchdowns on the night. The Colonels also got a strong game from tailback Owen Leen. Leen rushed 20 times for 70 yards and added three receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown. This included a 90-yard touchdown reception.
HOLMES 40, HOLY CROSS 13
Holmes got a dominating victory over Holy Cross Friday night. The Bulldogs did their damage on the ground as they rushed as a team 37 times for 298 yards. The running game was led by Curtez Hill who had 163 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. Miguel Garcia (77 yards, 1 TD) and Emauryon Arnold (54 yards, 2 TD) also had big nights in the rushing attack.
On the other side of the ball, the Holmes defense held Holy Cross to only -7 yards rushing and two first downs on the ground. With nothing going in the run game, Holy Cross went exclusively to the air. Quarterback Donovan Ambrocio led the offense with 201 yards passing and two touchdowns. He was 14-31 on the night in a losing effort.
NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 42, NEWPORT 26
Newport Central Catholic got a balanced effort to beat rival Newport 42-26 on Friday night. The Thoroughbreds rushed for 312 yards on the ground on a whopping 38 attempts.
Demetrick Welch Jr. had another big night on the ground. Welch Jr. carried the ball 18 times for 209 yards and four touchdowns. Luke Runyon and Kolton Smith also rushed for over 40 yards a piece themselves. Runyon also caught a receiving touchdown.
Smith only completed four passes but amassed 105 yards through the air on those four to continue his nice play over the season.
Quarterback Kyle Lee kept Newport afloat for the majority of the night. Lee was 29-47 for 331 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for another score. Lee connected with Mykell Martin nine times for 144 yards and found Quincy Barber eight times for 81 yards and three of his touchdowns in the loss.
