NKY Round-Up: Ryle wins with defense
- Updated: September 2, 2022
Week three was another action packed and exciting night on the gridiron as area teams fought tooth and nail for victories.
NO. 15 RYLE 13, COOPER 10
The Ryle Raiders outdueled Cooper for a 13-10 victory Friday night.
Logan Verax threw for 249 yards and Jace Harden rushed for 67 yards and a 16-yard touchdown to help Ryle sustain drives and get the victory.
Kai Workman knocked in a pair of field goals to lift Ryle to a 6-0 lead and the Raider defense did just enough to get by the Cooper Cougars.
Cooper outgained Ryle on the ground 177-85 and was led by Eli White who rushed for 122 yards and a 35-yard touchdown.
The Raiders did their damage through the air and limited Cooper to just 66 yards passing for the game.
Ryle’s defensive effort was headed by Gavin Lyons and Jacob Savage who each had six tackles.
LEXINGTON CATHOLIC 6, NO. 19 COVINGTON CATHOLIC 7
Covington Catholic won a defensive battle Friday night. Both defenses were stout throughout the first half as the game was tied 0-0 at the break.
In the second half much was the same until Max DeGraff took a 73-yard TD pass from Jackson Wasik. The PAT was no good as there was a botched snap. This would prove to be a huge moment but Lexington Catholic was up 6-0 with 4:14 to play in the third quarter.
Covington Catholic after being held down all night was finally able to get a positive drive going late in the fourth quarter. They would cash in on that drive when Tyler Rennekamp went in on a 3-yard TD run with 3:35 left in the game.
This would prove to be enough as Lexington Catholic could not score the rest of the way.
Evan Pitzer passed for 106 yards and rushed for 85 more to lead Covington Catholic in both categories.
DIXIE HEIGHTS 29, CONNER 14
Dixie Heights erased an early 14 point deficit to defeat Conner Friday night. The Colonels used a 16-point third quarter to take control of the game and get a convincing victory.
Dixie Heights did their work on the ground as they rushed for 275 yards as a team. Caleb Hinkle led the charge with 25 carries for 127 yards. The running back was a headache for the Connor defense all night long.
The Colonels also got a strong rushing attack Armani Gregg who carried the ball 10 times for 121 yards on the ground. He would also add a touchdown. The quarterback was also 11-16 for 70 yards through the air helping his teams secure the victory.
