Cincinnati Round-Up: Firebirds survive Fairfield in 2OT classic
- Updated: October 8, 2022
A region contender was severely tested in the GMC, an ECC championship is now within the grasp of some Warriors, and a GCL South squad ended a losing streak. Week 8 provided plenty of action for area teams looking to take momentum into the postseason.
#1 LAKOTA WEST 38, #6 FAIRFIELD 31
Lakota West and Fairfield battled tooth and nail going down into overtime before the Firebirds escaped Alumni Stadium in Fairfield with the victory. The two teams went toe to toe with no team giving an inch all the way until the final play. The two teams combined for 773 yards of total offense as they put on a display in front of a capacity crowd on route 4 in Fairfield. Not only did the two teams put on a display but both quarterbacks provided said crowd with an entertaining show.
Lakota West quarterback Mitch Bolden came up huge in his efforts to help his team to victory. Bolden led his team back from a first half deficit to get a big win on the road and keep his team’s hopes alive for a third consecutive GMC crown. The senior was 17-25 for 246 yards and a touchdown through the air. On the ground Bolden continued his damage. He rushed 23 times for 91 yards and four big touchdowns.
In a losing effort, Fairfield quarterback Talon Fisher had an incredible night himself. The senior led a rushing attack that accounted for 292 yards rushing and 31 points against one of the top defenses in the state. Fisher ran the ball 25 times for 173 yards and two touchdowns making play after play with his feet to almost pull the upset. The senior also had a nice night passing as he was 7-14 for 139 yards and another score.
The Indians, with two close losses to a pair of contending teams, should feel like they can play with and beat anyone in the region as we come to the home stretch. Lakota West took a giant step towards securing another GMC title and have to feel good about passing their first severe test since week one.
#3 WINTON WOODS 28, #12 MILFORD 14
Winton Woods went on the road and came away with a tough 28-14 victory on the road. The Milford Eagles had a great game plan and put up an incredible fight in a losing effort. The Eagles defense stepped up to the challenge to slow down Winton Woods tailback Trey Cornist. The Eagles held Cornist to a mere 20 yards rushing, well below his normal output. The Milford defense only gave up 14 points on the night.
Winton Woods quarterback Vance George stepped up huge in the absence of a running game. George was 14-20 for 197 yards and two touchdowns to help the Warriors pull away for the victory.
The Winton Woods defense kept them in the game early as they returned two interceptions for touchdowns for their first two scores. Donmiel Rogers Jr. started things with a 63-yard interception return to take a 7-0 lead. For their second score, Jermaine Matthews Jr. returned an INT 95 yards for a touchdown. The Warriors had four interceptions in the game to help slow down the Milford offense. Qiersten WIlliams added 11 tackles to pace the Warriors in that department.
#7 ST. XAVIER, 16 #14 LA SALLE 7
St. Xavier bounced back from a three-game losing skid to win the battle for the king of the road against La Salle on Friday night. The Bombers got off to a solid start and took a 9-0 lead into the break. An opening kickoff safety put the Bombers in a good position on the road. They would extend their lead with a 1-yard plunge by running back Steven Napier. St. Xavier led 9-0 at the half and held on for the victory.
The St. Xavier defense was the catalyst to the victory tonight by holding the Lancers to seven points. The 3-3-5 stack was tweaked a bit this week and seemed to work wonders in their defensive efforts. The Bombers moved to 3-5 on the season and give themselves a chance to gain some momentum heading into the division I, region IV playoffs.
