Cincinnati Round-Up: Sailers, defense propel Mason over Indians
- Updated: October 14, 2022
The GMC continues to be loaded with surprises and question marks. Good teams are getting wake-up calls down the stretch that should make them even better come playoff time. Year two of the expanded postseason has teams in a frenzy after Week 9.
#10 MASON 30, #6 FAIRFIELD 7
A resounding victory and dominant performance all the way around for Mason (7-2, 7-1) as they knocked off Fairfield (6-3, 5-3) and grabbed a share of second place in the league. The Comets have seven wins for the first time since 2018.
Mason running back Nick Sailers continued his hot streak. The senior ran for a season high 154 yards and found the end zone three times. The Comets defense held Fairfield to just 1-12 on third and fourth down conversions and came up with three interceptions, two by Sam Krueckeberg.
Indians star quarterback Talon Fisher for 104 yards including a 57-yard touchdown scamper. He now has a conference best 1,244 yards on the ground. Fairfield will host Lakota East (3-6, 3-5). Mason is off to Princeton (8-1, 7-1) for a GMC showstopper.
#12 MILFORD 27, WEST CLERMONT 26
It was a comeback for the ages as Milford (7-2, 6-2) erased a 20-0 deficit to steal a road win at West Clermont (4-5, 4-4). The Eagles have won seven games for a second straight season. They have had just one losing campaign since 2017.
Senior quarterback Austin Harden fueled the fire with three second half touchdowns tosses to Reece Davis, Luke Ray and the game clincher to Ashton Warther and the nine minute mark of the fourth quarter. Hardin now has 30 touchdown tosses on the season and 54 for his career.
Reece Davis got the Milford turned around started after West Clermont quarterback Bryson Earley hit freshman Chris Henry Jr. on a 10-yard scoring pass for 20 unanswered Wolves points to start the contest. Davis returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown, He finished with a game-high 154 all-purpose yards and his 11th touchdown reception of the year.
Henry Jr. reeled in three catches for a personal best 85 receiving yards and his fourth and fifth touchdown receptions. The Wolves finish up with a pivotal playoff road clash at Loveland (4-5, 4-4). Milford will travel to lowly Turpin (1-8, 1-7).
#13 BADIN 14, FENWICK 6
For a second straight week undefeated Badin (9-0, 4-0) survives a scare outlasting Fenwick (6-3, 2-2) on the road in a defensive gem turned in by both teams. It was the 29th consecutive regular season victory for the Rams who are seeking back-to-back 10-0 campaigns.
A pair of booming second quarter field goals from 42 and 49-yards off the foot of Fenwick kicker Derek Morris were the only scores of the first half. The Falcons ran 63 offensive plays and gained a mere 189 yards. Senior quarterback Jude Hooks threw for 74 yards and ran for 55 yards.
Trailing to start the third quarter for just the second time all-season Badin took a 7-6 lead on a 30-yard run by Braedyn Moore and extra-point by Nick Warner with just under three minutes left in the stanza. Sealing the deal, the Rams defense came up big when Carson Cheek recovered a fumble and took it 42-yards for a score for the games final points with just over nine minutes left in the contest. It was one of three costly turnovers by Fenwick.
Since the beginning of 2020, Badin is a combined 31-2. In that span, the Rams have allowed just 8.6 points per game, held 26 foes to 14 points or less, with 16 of those teams having been held to seven points or fewer and eight of those wins by shutout.
