Highlands snaps skid versus CovCath
- Updated: October 15, 2022
PARK HILLS, Kentucky – The Blitz 5 Tour made its way to Northern Kentucky on Friday for Week 9 as Covington Catholic hosted Highlands. The Colonels entered the evening winners of nine straight in the long-time series between rivals. The Bluebirds didn’t let the streak hit double digits, picking up their first win over CovCath since November 2015.
The evening didn’t start great for Highlands as they committed three turnovers before seven minutes ticked off the clock in the first quarter. However, Covington Catholic could only get seven points out of it and that kept the Bluebirds in the game. They would close out the first frame with 10 unanswered points and lead at the break 10-7.
Dawson Hosea put Highlands up 10 with a 5-yard rushing touchdown four minutes into the third quarter, but CovCath would come back to take the lead following an Evan Pitzer to Braylon Miller 30-yard TD pass on the following drive and a 4-yard TD run Owen Lee with nine minutes left in the game.
From that point on it was all Highlands. The defense came up with a safety after forcing an intentional grounding in the end zone. Charlie Noon returned the ensuing free kick 64-yards to make it 25-21. Highlands failed on the two-point conversion to keep the lead at four. The Bluebirds’ D got the stop on the following drive before Hosea sealed the deal with a 32-yard TD run with 1:54 left in the game.
Hosea finished the night with 73 yards on 12 carries along with the two scores. Quarterback Brody Benke threw for 179 yards and three scores on 9-of-17 passing. In addition to the big kick return, Noon led all receivers with 106 yards on three catches and added 28 rushing yards.
CovCath was paced by Braylon Miller, who finished with nine receptions for 87 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
With the win Highlands now has a chance to win the Class 5A, District 5 title outright next week as they host Cooper. A Cooper win, coupled with a CovCath victory over Conner, would cause a three-way tie in the district.
