NKY Round-Up: Bluebirds continue winning ways
- Updated: October 21, 2022
The final week of the regular season came with a bang! A pair of Northern Kentucky powers cruised to big victories as Highlands kept up their winning ways and some Colonels got back in the win column with a dominating performance.
NO. 14 HIGHLANDS 34, COOPER 5
Highlands ran away from Cooper early and often for a dominating win Friday night. The Bluebirds got off to a fast start and never looked back on their way to victory. Brody Benke got Highlands on the board first with a 16-yard touchdown run near the end of the first quarter. The lead was 7-0.
The Highlands defense didn’t allow Cooper to build any offensive momentum all night long. The Cooper defense held up in the first half as they kept Highlands from stretching the lead very far. Bluebird kicker Davis Burleigh knocked in two first half field goals to help Highlands take a 13-2 lead into the half.
In the second half the Highlands offense took it up a notch. Cameron Giesler and Benke scored offensive touchdowns in the half, and Carson Class returned an interception for a touchdown to produce the final score.
NO. 15 COVINGTON CATHOLIC 42, CONNER 3
The Covington Catholic Colonels lit up the scoreboard in a big victory over Conner. The Colonels outgained Conner 419-157 on Friday night as they cruised to the win.
Zacc Roberts stepped into the starting role at quarterback and went 13-17 for 250 yards and three touchdowns through the air to lead the team to the win. He found Braylon Miller for four receptions, 134 yards and two of those scores. Miller was a tough cover for the Conner secondary.
Owen Leen carried the ball 13 times for 89 yards and a pair of scores to pace the rushing attack. The Colonels put up a dominating effort up front for the tailback to get loose on several nice runs.
Conner’s lone points came on a 36-yard field goal by Andrew Herron.
NO. 18 BEECHWOOD 57, NEWPORT 0
Despite losing their senior leader, Mitch Berger, to a season-ending knee injury the Tigers’ offense didn’t skip a beat on Thursday as they rolled past the Wildcats, 57-0.
With the win, Beechwood locked up the top seed in the district playoffs starting next month. The Tigers outscored their district foes in the three wins by a 146-10 margin.
Sophomore running back Chase Flaherty was the next man up in the backfield in this one and responded by scoring four touchdowns to pace the Tigers’ offense.
