NKY Round Up: Lloyd, CovCath close season strong
- Updated: October 28, 2022
The regular season came to a close in Northern Kentucky with several teams bringing solid efforts to the table. The Juggernauts of Lloyd Memorial squeezed by some Bulldogs and CovCath finished the season with a dominating win.
COVINGTON CATHOLIC 47, RYLE 21
The Colonels put some big numbers up on the board en route to victory Friday night. Covington Catholic outgained Ryle 444-231 in total yards as they controlled the game on the ground. The Colonels racked up a hefty 314 yards on the ground.
Owen Leen carried the ball 22 times for 185 yards and three scores and his backfield mate Zacc Roberts toted 10 times for 120 yards and two touchdowns to pace the attack on the ground. Roberts added 130 yards passing and another two scores for the potent Colonel offense.
Logan Verax passed for 169 yards for Ryle in the losing effort.
LLOYD 24, HOLMES 20
Lloyd Memorial finished the regular season with a tight win over Holmes on Thursday night. The Juggernauts were out gained by the host Bulldogs 259-189 but were able to make the big plays when they mattered to secure the win.
Senior tailback Kaiden Zulager surpassed 1,000 yards rushing on the season with yet another solid performance. Zulager rushed 17 times for 84 yards and also hauled in his only reception for 32 yards. The running game was a key in an efficient offensive effort that consisted of zero turnovers.
Elijah Westwood led the charge on defense with 14 tackles. John Crim (11) and Elijah Collins (10) also had double digit tackles on the night. The Lloyd defense also was opportunistic on their side of the ball as they got interceptions from sophomore Isaiah Sebastian and junior Thomas Plymesser to thwart a pair of Bulldog drives.
The playoffs are up next for each squad next week. Lloyd Memorial entertains Owen County (5-4) and Holmes will find out its opponent after Friday’s games.
