TSF 2022 Kentucky OPOY: Mitch Berger
- Updated: February 21, 2023
One of the winningest and most decorated players to ever lace ‘em up for Beechwood, senior Mitch Berger was named the TriState Football Kentucky Offensive Player of the Year, as TSF paid tribute to the area’s finest from Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, Dayton and Southeast Indiana at the Year in Review Show on Monday night, in front of a packed house at the Holy Grail in downtown Cincinnati.
Berger was dominate for Beechwood (14-1) despite playing in just eight games. He ran for 1,119 yards, had 21 rushing touchdowns (tops in Northern Kentucky), 19 receptions, 251 yards receiving, two touchdown catches, went perfect on all his kicks going 19/19 on extra points and 1/1 on field goal attempts. He averaged 20.0 points per game. He also garnered NKFCA Class 2A, District 6 POY, First Team All-NKY (RB & LB – on both sides of the ball for a third straight season), NKFCA Top 26, First Team All-TSF (LB) and TSF NKY OPOY finalist (second straight season) accolades.
To put Berger’s dominance into perspective, Beechwood’s foes scored a grand total of 69 points in the eight games in which he played. Berger had 120 points in that span, many of those contests the Tigers had a backup freshman starting at quarterback.
Beechwood went 39-3 with three state titles in Berger’s final three season as a starter. He has signed with Eastern Kentucky to play baseball.
The other Kentucky Offensive Player of the Year finalists were seniors Chase Crone (Simon Kenton), Charlie Noon (Highlands), Jaxson Rice (Ludlow), along with juniors Owen Leen (Covington Catholic), Zayn Satchwell (Carroll County) and Demetrick Welch (Newport Central Catholic).
TriStateFootball.com was founded in 2005 and started its postseason awards in 2007. Berger is just the third player from Northern Kentucky to be named a TSF POY finalist three times in the 16-year history of the awards. He joins Michael Mayer (Covington Catholic/Notre Dame) and Quincy Perrin (Scott/Kentucky Wesleyan) for the distinct honor.
