2023 Snapshot: Mariemont
- Updated: July 20, 2023
One year removed from a 7-3 regular season finish and a playoff win, the Mariemont Warriors tumbled in 2022 to 3-7 in the regular season. A lot of reasons could be pointed to as the cause of the fall, namely injuries and inexperience, but Mariemont is primed to look at 2023 to get back on track, bringing back extensive experience, particularly on offense.
The offense should click once again with five of the six skill position players returning, in addition to four of five offensive linemen. Coach Nick Leone says the group has a strong bond and really like playing together, which should help the Warriors get back to their winning ways.
Mariemont graduated a ton of talented players from last year’s team, but the inexperience on defense should not hinder the hopes of this team competing for a Cincinnati Hills League Championship.
“We faced a lot of adversity last year but what has been so exciting is it hasn’t derailed us from our long-term plans and goals,” Warriors Head Coach Nick Leone said. “Our numbers have increased every year for the last three years including this upcoming season with 60 players currently signed up to play. The weight room is full of kids working hard to write the 2023 season exactly how they want it. The community believes in this group and knows they have the potential to have a great season.”
The Warriors will have winnable non-conference games in Weeks 1 and 2, facing Oakwood and Norwood, who were a combined 5-15 last season. Week 3 will be a little tougher against a good Williamsburg team that went 8-3 in 2022.
Division V, Region 20
2022 RECORD: 3-7, 2-5 CHL
COACH: Nick Leone (17-15 at Mariemont, three years; 17-15 overall)
HONOR ROLL
Lawson Wade, Sr, OL/DL – An every-down player on both sides of the ball. Fans will rarely see Wade on the sideline. He was named OPSWA Division V Honorable Mention All-Ohio (DL) as junior, totaling 52 total tackles, one-and-a-half sacks, with four tackles for loss, and one forced fumble.
Ryan Glassmeyer, Sr, WR/DB – Glassmeyer broke out in 2022 for the Warriors, becoming an explosive threat with six touchdowns on 22 receptions and averaged 12.5 yards per catch. Glassmeyer was named Second Team All-CHL as a junior. He was also a stud on defense with 45 total tackles and three interceptions.
Andrew Duckwall, Sr, OL/DL – Another ironman player for Mariemont. One of the toughest players on the team. Duckwall will be an every-down player on both sides of the ball. He was an Honorable Mention All-CHL selection as a junior.
Davis Whitmore, Sr, WR/DB – An explosive and smooth wide receiver, Whitmore averaged over 13 yards per reception. He had to step into defensive back last year after many injuries and really excelled there as well. He was named honorable Mention All-CHL as junior. For his career, Whitemore has 33 receptions for 458 yards, two touchdown catches, 16 tackles and one interception.
OTHER RETURNEES
Charlie Tully, Sr, QB/DB – Tully returns under center after a serious injury he suffered in a 2022 scrimmage that knocked him out for the entire year. Leone calls Tully, “a great leader and great athlete.” As a sophomore, he threw for 767 passing yards and six touchdowns, while also adding 173 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Tully also stars on defense with 32 tackles, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
Jack Simpson, So, TE/DL – One of the few instances of a freshman being a full-time starter last year. He tallied 42 total tackles, had two sacks, four tackles for losses and a fumble recovery in his varsity debut. Simpson will look to continue his growth on the DL and will be a potential player to help fill the huge gap left by Mark Morgan on offense.
Max Duckwall, So, RB/LB – Another player who had great moments last year but then was lost to a season ending injury. A hard runner between the tackles who works extremely hard in the weight room and on the field. Duckwall, will be an impact player on both sides of the ball this season. He ran for 238 of the teams 1,009 yards with three touchdowns in seven games as a freshman.
NEWCOMERS
Will Frye, So, WR/DB – Having one of the best offseasons on the team. Frye is poised to be an impact player on both sides of the ball.
Eli Hernandes, Sr, OL/DL – After a year away from the team, Hernandes comes back and could be a huge impact player for the Warriors.
Carson Van Lieu, Sr, WR/DB – A former soccer player, Carson is a big and fast player who wanted to join the team as a senior for the first time ever. His athleticism and toughness will be a huge asset this season.
