Blitz 5 Top 25: Week 5

After four weeks of the season, nothing should surprise anyone anymore. Upsets have highlighted the marquee thus far and 10 teams in last week’s Blitz 5 Top 25 presented by TriStateFootball.com took it on the chin. As we hit the halfway point of the schedule expect the rest of the season to be just as wild down the stretch.

This week there are five games that have Blitz 5 Top 25 teams going to battle: #2 Princeton hosts #16 Hamilton with the winner still controlling its destiny in the quest for a GMC title; #3 St. Xavier is at #11 Moeller; #8 Milford travels to #14 Kings; #9 Covington Catholic hops the overpass and heads to rival #19 Beechwood in a battle of unbeatens; and #20 Fairfield welcomes #24 Mason in this week’s Blitz 5 Game of the Week. There are six ranked teams (Beechwood, Covington Catholic, Elder, Hamilton, East Central and Kings) playing games against schools that have yet to lose a game.

Here is a look at the latest Blitz 5 Top 25:

1. Winton Woods (4-0, 3-0) – LAST WEEK: beat at Turpin (2-1, 1-1), 20-0.The Warriors’ defense is still only giving up 37 yards per game rushing (1.8/yards per carry) and hasn’t given up a touchdown on the ground. UP: 9/15 – LITTLE MIAMI (0-4, 0-3).

2. Princeton (4-0, 3-0) – LAST WEEK: won at then #20 Mason (1-3, 1-2), 20-3. The Vikings’ defense is allowing just 7.2 points per contest. NEXT UP: 9/15 – #16 HAMILTON (3-1, 3-0).

3. St. Xavier (3-1) – LAST WEEK: won at #6 Withrow (3-0), 14-10. The last of four straight road games this week sees the Bombers looking to avenge two losses to Big Moe last season. NEXT UP: 9/15 – at #11 Moeller (1-3) at Welcome Stadium, University of Dayton.

4. East Central (4-0, 1-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Franklin County (2-2, 1-1). 55-0. Trojans’ senior running back Josh Ringer set school records with 70 rushing touchdowns and 444 career points. He has 16 touchdowns this season and 13 of them have come before halftime. NEXT UP: 9/15 – at Batesville (4-0, 2-0).

5. Elder (2-2) – LAST WEEK: lost to ST. EDWARD (4-0), 34-33. The Panthers lost another heartbreaker to the St. Ed’s, but now they know they can play with the best in Ohio. NEXT UP: 9/15 – at Louisville St. Xavier (KY)(3-0).

6. Lakota West (2-2, 2-1) – LAST WEEK: beat then #19 MIDDLETOWN (2-2, 1-2), 35-0. It’s back-to-back shutouts for the Firebirds’ defense. They have given up just three touchdowns on the season. NEXT UP: 9/15 – at Colerain (0-4, 0-3).

7. Withrow (3-1) – LAST WEEK: lost to #3 ST. XAVIER (3-1), 14-10. The Tigers had the Bombers on the ropes, but couldn’t deliver the knockout blow. NEXT UP: 9/15 – TROTWOOD-MADISON (3-1).

8. Milford (4-0, 3-0) – LAST WEEK: won at then #8 Anderson (3-1, 2-1), 56-35. The red-hot Eagles are averaging 46.0 points per game. NEXT UP: 9/1 – at #14 Kings (3-1, 2-1).

9. Covington Catholic (4-0) – LAST WEEK: beat DIXIE HEIGHTS (1-3), 31-24. The Colonels have topped the 30-point mark in all four games. NEXT UP: 9/15 – at #19 Beechwood (4-0).

10. Anderson (3-1, 2-1) – LAST WEEK: lost to then #10 MILFORD (3-0, 2-0), 56-35. After allowing just 14.3 points per game over the first three weeks, the Raptors’ defense gave up seven offensive touchdowns in a loss. NEXT UP: 9/15 – WALNUT HILLS (0-4, 0-3).

11. Moeller (1-3) – LAST WEEK: lost at Center Grove (IN) (3-1), 35-34 in overtime. For the third time in the last five years, the Crusaders are off to a 1-3 start. NEXT UP: 9/15 – #3 ST. XAVIER (3-1) at Welcome Stadium, University of Dayton.

12. Taft (3-1) –  LAST WEEK: beat MEADOWDALE (1-3), 44-6. The Senators have scored 40 points or more in all three of their wins. NEXT UP: 9/15 – at Purcell Marian (3-1).

13. La Salle (3-1) – LAST WEEK: won at Louisville Central (KY) (1-3), 21-0. The Lancers have given up just 10 points in their three victories. NEXT UP: 9/15 – Buffalo Canisius (NY) (0-2).

14. Kings (3-1, 2-1) – LAST WEEK: lost at Loveland (1-3, 1-2).35-12. The loss to the Tigers snapped a 27-regular season winning streak against ECC foes. UP NEXT: 9/15 – #8 MILFORD (4-0, 3-0).

15. Badin (4-0) – LAST WEEK: beat ROGER BACON (3-0), 35-2. The Rams’ defense is allowing just 5.5 points per game. NEXT UP: 9/15 – HUGHES (1-3).

16. Hamilton (3-1, 3-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Oak Hills (1-3, 1-2), 26-7. The Big Blue has won three straight GMC games for the first time since 2020. NEXT UP: 9/15 – at #2 Princeton (4-0, 3-0).

17. Sycamore (3-1, 3-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Colerain (0-4, 0-3), 35-14. The Aviators have won three straight GMC games for the first time since 2017. NEXT UP: 9/15 – OAK HILLS (1-3, 1-2).

18. Middletown (2-2, 1-2) – LAST WEEK: lost at then #7 Lakota West (2-2, 2-1), 35-0.
The Middies could only muster up 78 yards of total offense versus the Firebirds. NEXT UP: 9/15 – LAKOTA EAST (0-4, 0-3).

19. Beechwood (4-0) – LAST WEEK: beat SIMON KENTON (1-2), 58-54. The Tigers’ offense is averaging 52.3 points over its last three wins. Junior quarterback Clay Hayden has thrown 16 touchdown passes with just one interception in that span. NEXT UP: 9/15 – #9 COVINGTON CATHOLIC (4-0).

20. Fairfield (1-3, 1-2) – LAST WEEK: won at then at #21 Lakota East (0-4, 0-3), 38-35. Three of the Indians’ four games have been decided by seven points or less.  NEXT UP: 9/15 – #24 MASON (1-3, 1-2).

21. Clinton-Massie (4-0) – LAST WEEK: won at then #14 Mount Healthy (3-1), 28-26. The Falcons have won seven straight regular season games. NEXT UP: 9/15 – at Harrison (3-1).

22. Mount Healthy (3-1) – LAST WEEK: lost to then #24 CLINTON-MASSIE (4-0), 28-26. No Rest for the weary as the Owls will face an unbeaten team for a second straight week this Friday. NEXT UP: 9/15 – FENWICK (4-0).

23. Highlands (3-1) – LAST WEEK: beat Ryle (2-2), 52-20. The Bluebirds’ offense is soaring, having scored 119 points over the last two weeks. NEXT UP: 9/15 – at Raceland (2-1).

24. Mason (1-3, 1-2) – LAST WEEK: lost to 2 PRINCETON (4-0, 3-0), 20-3. The Comets have scored six points or less three times. NEXT UP: 9/15 – at #20 Fairfield (1-3, 1-2).

25. Wyoming (4-0, 1-0) – LAST WEEK: beat Madeira (2-2, 0-1), 28-20. The Cowboys ran their regular-season winning streak to 71 games. NEXT UP: 9/15 – TAYLOR (2-2, 1-0).
