Blitz 5 Top 25: Week 6

The pecking order has sorted itself out in the Blitz 5 Top 25 presented by TriStateFootball.com at the midway point of the regular season. Expect the waters to get murkier in the rankings as we head down the back half of the year. With so many surprises in 2023 it is clear that this poll is far from its final sculpting.

There are seven games that have Blitz 5 Top 25 teams going head-to-head, #4 Elder is at #6 St. Xavier, #5 Moeller hosts #13 La Salle, #7 Lakota West heads to #16 Sycamore, #8 Withrow is at #12 Taft, #17 Middletown welcomes in #21 Mason, #20 Highlands is on the road at #24 Cooper and #1 Winton Woods travels to #11 Anderson in this week’s Blitz 5 Game of the Week. Eight teams in this week’s rankings are still unbeaten.

Here is a look at the latest Blitz 5 Top 25:

  1. Winton Woods (5-0, 4-0) – LAST WEEK: beat LITTLE MIAMI (0-5, 0-4), 51-0. The
    Warriors defense has pitched shutouts in three of their last four games and only given up 20 points total on the season. UP NEXT: 9/22 – at #11 Anderson (4-1, 3-1).

    2. Princeton (5-0, 4-0) – LAST WEEK: beat then #16 HAMILTON (3-2, 3-1), 22-16. The Vikings control their own destiny and are looking for their first outright GMC championship since 1993. NEXT UP: 9/22 – at Oak Hills (2-3, 1-3).3. East Central (5-0, 1-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Batesville (4-1, 2-0), 42-0. It’s 11 victories in a row for the Trojans who have been dominant during the streak with a 37.2-point margin of victory. UP NEXT: SOUTH DEARBORN (3-2, 1-1).

    4. Elder (3-2, 0-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Louisville St. Xavier (KY)(3-1), 31-21. The Panthers have scored 28 points or more in all five games. NEXT UP: 9/22 – at #6 St. Xavier (3-2, 0-1).

    5. Moeller (2-3, 1-0) – LAST WEEK: beat then #3 ST. XAVIER (3-2, 0-2), 20-10. Senior running back Jordan Marshall has run for more than 100 yards in seven straight games and topped that mark in 21 of his last 25 starts. NEXT UP: 9/22 – #13 LA SALLE (4-1).

    6. St. Xavier (3-2, 0-1) – LAST WEEK: lost at then #11 Moeller (2-3, 0-1), 20-10. The Bombers are struggling to find offense having scored more than 14 points just one time. They have a minus-5 turnover ratio over the past three weeks. NEXT UP: 9/22 – #4 ELDER (3-2, 0-0).

    7. Lakota West (3-2, 3-1) – LAST WEEK: won at Colerain (0-5, 0-4), 38-7. The Firebirds defense is “en fuego” allowing just 7.0 points per contest with no one scoring more than 18 points on them. NEXT UP: 9/22 –at #16 Sycamore (3-2, 2-2).

    8. Withrow (4-1) – LAST WEEK: beat TROTWOOD-MADISON (4-1), 21-7. The defense has been stellar for the Tigers allowing just 7.2 points per contest and holding every opponent to 14 points or less. NEXT UP: 9/23 –#12 TAFT (4-1).

    9. Milford (5-0, 4-0) – LAST WEEK: won at then #14 Kings (3-2, 2-2), 40-21. The Eagles are unbeaten but giving up 29.8 points in ECC play. NEXT UP: 9/1 – LITTLE MIAMI (0-5, 0-4).

    10. Covington Catholic (5-0) – LAST WEEK: won at #19 Beechwood (4-1), 35-31. The Colonels showed great poise and character erasing a 21-point deficit at Beechwood to remain perfect. NEXT UP: 9/22 – HOLMES (0-5).

    11. Anderson (4-1, 3-1) – LAST WEEK: beat WALNUT HILLS (0-4, 0-3), 51-0. The Raptors have just five sacks and five takeaways on the year but have a 24.6-point average margin of victory. NEXT UP: 9/22 – #1 WINTON WOODS (5-0, 4-0).

    12.Taft (4-1) LAST WEEK: won at Purcell Marian (3-2), 14-7. The Senators get a scare and wake-up call, narrowly escaping at Purcell Marian. NEXT UP: 9/23 – at #8 Withrow (4-1).

    13. La Salle (4-1) – LAST WEEK: beat Buffalo Canisius (NY) (0-3), 31-13. The Lancers allowing just 5.8 points in their four victories. NEXT UP: 9/22 – at #5 Moeller (2-3, 1-0).

    14. Badin (5-0) – LAST WEEK: beat HUGHES (1-4), 49-12. The Rams have won 32 consecutive regular season games. NEXT UP: 9/22 – BISHOP FENWICK (4-1).

    15. Hamilton (3-2, 3-1) – LAST WEEK: lost at #2 Princeton (5-0, 4-0), 22-16. The Big Blue’s only two losses are to undefeated teams Princeton and Badin. NEXT UP: 9/22 – FAIRFIELD (1-4, 1-3).

    16. Sycamore (3-2, 3-1) – LAST WEEK: lost to OAK HILLS (2-3, 2-2), 27-21. The Aviators did themselves no favors in the GMC title race with the loss to the Highlanders as Lakota West, Hamilton and Princeton are still lurking on the schedule. NEXT UP: 9/22 – LAKOTA WEST (3-2, 3-1).

    17. Middletown (3-2, 2-2) – LAST WEEK: beat LAKOTA EAST (0-5, 0-4), 21-14.
    The Middies have turned the ball over 12 times and have a minus-3 turnover ratio. NEXT UP: 9/22 – at #21 Mason (2-3, 2-2).

    18. Kings (3-2, 2-2) – LAST WEEK: lost to then #8 MILFORD (5-0, 4-0), 40-21. The Knights have suffered back-to-back ECC losses for the first time since 2019. UP NEXT: 9/22 – WEST CLERMONT (3-2, 3-1).

    19. Beechwood (4-1) – LAST WEEK: lost to then #9 COVINGTON CATHOLIC (5-0), 35-31. The Tigers 14-game winning streak is broken, with “the one that got away.” NEXT UP: 9/22 – GALLATIN COUNTY (3-1).

    20. Highlands (4-1) – LAST WEEK: won at Raceland (2-1), 40-0. The Bluebirds offense is averaging 53.0 points over the last three games. Sophomore quarterback Rio Litmer is completing 69.4% of his passes with 10 touchdown tosses and just one interception in that span. NEXT UP: 9/22 –at #24 Cooper (4-1).

    21. Mason (2-3, 2-2) – LAST WEEK: won at then #20 Fairfield (1-4, 1-3). 21-14. The Comets have just seven offensive touchdowns on the year. NEXT UP: 9/22 – #17 MIDDLETOWN (3-2, 2-2).

    22. Clinton-Massie (5-0) – LAST WEEK: won at Harrison (3-2), 21-14. The giant killers were at it again posting a second win over a Division II squad. NEXT UP: 9/22 – at Wilmington (4-1).

    23. Mount Healthy (4-1) – LAST WEEK: beat BISHOP FENWICK (4-1), 28-25. The division IV Owls next four games are against Division II schools. NEXT UP: 9/22 – at Northwest (0-5).

    24. Cooper (4-1) – LAST WEEK: won at Great Crossing (1-4), 4-0. The Jaguars defense is allowing 11.6 points per game. They have a tough task trying to hold down a Highlands team that is putting up 42.8 points per contest. NEXT UP: 9/22 – #20 HIGHLANDS (4-1).

    25. Wyoming (5-0, 2-0) – LAST WEEK: beat TAYLOR (2-3, 1-1), 38-0. The Cowboys run their regular season winning streak to 72 games. NEXT UP: 9/22 – at Reading (4-1, 2-0).
