Cincinnati Round-Up: Elder, Moeller setup showdown
- Updated: September 22, 2023
The second half of the regular season got off to a tremendous start as GCL South rivals went to war and some Cowboys continued their unprecedented streak in our Cincinnati round-up.
NO. 4 ELDER 32, NO. 6 ST. XAVIER 31 (OT)
The Elder Panthers went on the road and came away with an exciting 32-31 victory on Friday night. The 107th meeting all-time between the two squads went down to the very end and lived up to the hype as the game went into overtime.
In the end after a Bombers’ score to start overtime, Elder responded with a score plus 2-point conversion to steal a win on the road. Ryan Brass led the Panthers to victory. The senior QB uncharacteristically passed 34 times finding his wideouts more than usual.
Brass was his customary self on the ground, including the final touchdown and conversion to win the game for the Panthers. Brass was 21-34 for 239 yards and 2 scores. On the ground he carried the ball 25 times for 128 yards and 2 more scores. Josh Mirus had 111 yards receiving and a score.
In a losing effort, St. Xavier was led by quarterback Daniel Vollmer who rushed for 281 yards and three scores.
NO. 5 MOELLER 28, NO. 13 LA SALLE 20
GCL South rivals Moeller and La Salle played a typical conference game on Friday night. The Crusaders and Lancers engaged in a hard nosed physical defensive battle on the campus of Mount St. Joseph’s University.
The Moeller defense stepped up huge in the red zone on several occasions to keep the Lancers out of the end zone. The Moeller offense was efficient in their efforts as well. Jovan Love scored on a 33-yard touchdown from Matt Ponatoski for the only touchdown of the first half. Moeller led 7-3 at the break.
La Salle took the lead midway through the third as Patrick McLaughlin found Kyle Reynolds for a 25 yard TD and a 9-7 advantage. Ponatoski would respond for Moeller as he found Love again, this time for a 74-yard score and Moeller would never relinquish the lead again. Jordan Marshall added a score as well for the Crusaders.
NO. 25 WYOMING 21, READING 14
Wyoming picked up their 73rd consecutive regular season win with a victory over Reading. The Cowboys had to work hard for this one as the Blue Devils were poised for the upset.
In the end Wyoming was able to make just enough plays to sneak away with the road victory and continue their dominance in the Cincinnati Hills League.
