Mason wins GMC slugfest

Defense carried the way to a GMC win for one of the usual top teams on Friday night. The Mason Comets got some big stops throughout the night that led them to victory.

FAIRFIELD, Ohio – The Mason Comets made the short trip over to Fairfield for a key GMC battle on Friday night. Both the Comets and the Indians came into the affair neck and neck in the league with 1-2 records. Each was looking to springboard their way to positivity for the second half of the season. Both teams showed their physical natures and played a tough game and in the end it was Mason coming away with a hard fought 21-14 road win.

The defense came to play from the start. Fairfield took their opening drive and moved the ball well. Navy commit Talon Fisher made some nice reads and carried the ball for positive yards on several occasions, pushing the Indians into Mason territory. The Comets would finally force a fourth down and get a big stop to turn Fairfield away on downs.

Mason then returned the favor with a nice drive of their own. They used their own physical running game to go on an impressive opening drive as they climbed their way across midfield. It was then the Indians’ defense who came up with a big stop as Mason failed on a fourth down attempt of their own. Fairfield got the ball back as the first quarter came to a close.

Fisher led his team back down the field on the second drive. Once again his legs did most of the damage and he found several wideouts on solid gains. Mason came to the challenge once again by forcing a fourth and short but this time Fisher came through with a short gain and the conversion. Several plays later, Fisher burst over the goal line for a 2-yard plunge and the lead. It was 7-0 after the PAT.

After the two squads exchanged punts, Mason put together a nice drive to end the half. Mason senior running back Sky Talley was huge on the drive as he broke several runs of over six yards as he led the march down the field and deep into the redzone. Once there, Mason quarterback Caden Ashhurst found tight end Liam McManes over the middle for a 6-yard score. The game was tied at 7 at the half.

Fairfield came out pumped up in the second half. Their defense manufactured an early stop to start the half. After the three and out, Mason pinned the Indians already on their own 1-yard line. On the second play of the drive, Fisher connected with Noah King who took the seam pass 99 yards for a score. The big play had the Fairfield crowd roaring and Mason on their heels.

The Comets did not stay down long however. They turned around and went on a tough and physical drive that led them down the field and into scoring position. Temilade Adesanya punched one in for Mason from 1-yard away and the game was tied again.

Fairfield’s next drive was a productive one as they marched down the field and into field goal range. Aiden McGuire’s kick was blocked by Preston Estoesta. The momentum was suddenly Mason’s late in the fourth quarter. The Comets took another physical drive down the field and with 2:39 remaining, Sky Talley sprinted into the endzone from six yards away. Mason led 21-14.

Tyler George had a huge kick return on the ensuing kickoff putting Fairfield in good spirits and great field position. The Comets however stood up to the challenge and Liam McManes slammed the door shut with a sack on Talon Fisher on fourth down. Mason went into victory formation for the big road victory.
