NKY Round-Up: Highlands scores big
- Updated: September 9, 2023
The Bluebird offense erupted, and the battle of the Colonels came down to the wire in our NKY round-up.
HIGHLANDS 52, NO. 25 RYLE 20
Highlands scored on their first five possessions and never looked back as they blew past Ryle 52-20 in a lopsided affair. The Bluebirds led 35-7 at the half and were never threatened as they remain with only one loss on the short season.
Logan Verax threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Lee to give Ryle an early 7-0 lead but that was as good as things would get for the Raiders. Brody Benke would get things going for Highlands soon after. He would score on a 2-yard run before hitting Luke Schneider for a 15-yard TD to give Highlands a 14-7 lead.
After another stop and solid drive, Adam Surrey took one in from five yards out to increase the lead to 21-7. The Bluebirds would recover a fumble and Benke went back to work again. This time it was a 17-yard touchdown reception from Rio Litmer.
The Bluebird took that commanding lead and were able to put Ryle away in the second half.
NO. 12 COVINGTON CATHOLIC 31, DIXIE HEIGHTS 24
Evan Pitzer found UK commit Willie Rodriguez for a 29-yard touchdown pass with 13 seconds left to lift Covington Catholic to a 31-24 win over Dixie Heights on Friday night. Both teams battled all night long as the Colonels survived with the late go-ahead drive. This was the 50th all time matchup between the two squads as CovCath took home the bragging rights in the Battle for Colonel highway.

After a 3-0 lead, Covington Catholic would extend their lead when Owen Leen took a pitch one yard for a touchdown and a 10-0 lead. The Dixie Colonels cut the lead to 10-7 after a quick score of their own. CovCath would again respond as Pitzer hooked up with Rodriguez for ten yards and a touchdown for a 17-7 advantage. Pitzer would add a 4-yard rush TD on the night as the blue Colonels held on after a great Dixie Heights comeback.
Pitzer passed for 236 yards and 5 touchdowns on the night to lead Covington Catholic. Rodriguez hauled in two TD’s as well. Armoni Gregg had 22 carries for 119 yards and three scores to lead Dixie Heights in a losing effort.
