NKY Round-Up: Highlands wins shootout
- Updated: September 22, 2023
Lloyd put up a dominating performance and the Bluebirds of Highlands flew to victory in our NKY round-up.
NO. 20 HIGHLANDS 58, NO. 24 COOPER 51
Offense was everywhere and defense was optional when Cooper took on Highlands. The Bluebirds and Jaguars both put up outstanding offensive performances in their battle on Friday night. In the end it was Highlands that did just a bit more to come away with the victory.
Highlands rushed for over 400 yards on the ground and Cooper passed for over 400 yards through the air in this high scoring affair. As per the usual, Highlands do it all quarterback Brody Benke had a tremendous outing. Benke accounted for five touchdowns in the first half alone. Highlands led 34-17 at the break and Benke had already passed for three scores and ran for another two. The Bluebirds had 406 yards of total offense in the half.
Cam O’Hara did his thing for Cooper in a losing effort. The sophomore play caller was slinging the ball all over the field on his way to over 600 yards passing on the night. He led a feverish comeback that came up just short in the final minutes. Highlands was able to run out the clock on the high scoring affair.
LLOYD MEMORIAL 45, NEWPORT 8
Lloyd Memorial scored 45 unanswered points to dominate Newport on Friday night. After an early turnover, Newport cashed in with a score and two-point conversion to lead 8-0. That is the best that things would get as the Juggernauts took off from there.
Lloyd rebounded from the early blunder and went ahead 26-8 at the half and never looked back. The Juggernauts used a physical running game and precise passing to carve up the Newport defense and protect their home field in the victory. Lloyd continues their strong play over the course of the season and hope to be gearing up for another playoff run as they had a season ago.
