Cincinnati Round-Up: Milford edges out Winton Woods
- Updated: October 7, 2023
The Week 7 schedule provided the area with some exciting matchups and conference titles on the line, most notably in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference where two of the top three teams faced off.
No. 5 MILFORD 3, NO. 8 WINTON WOODS 0
The Milford Eagles are just one win away from clinching at least a share of the ECC title after knocking off the Division II powerhouse and defending ECC champions Winton Woods Warriors 3-0 in a defensive battle at Winton Woods.
This game saw no scoring for the first 45 minutes until the Eagles finally broke the tie with 2:07 remaining in the game on a 22-yard field goal by Mason Cooper. On the ensuing Winton Woods drive, the Warriors got into Milford territory and attempted to tie the game at the buzzer with a field goal, but the kick hit off the uprights and straight down to the ground, clinching the win for Milford.
Not all hope is lost for Warriors fans, though. Since joining the ECC in 2020, this is only the second time Winton Woods has lost two league games. The last time was in 2021 when the Warriors dropped games to Kings and Anderson in the regular season before making a run to a state championship. With Loveland and Lebanon left on the schedule, another run could be in store for the Warriors.
Milford, meanwhile, should remain atop the Division I computer rankings with the win. The Eagles also have a legitimate shot at winning out with games left against West Clermont and Turpin.

No. 9 ST. XAVIER 24, NO. 15 LA SALLE 13
The Moeller Crusaders already locked up the GCL South title in Week 7 but there was still a lot to play for at RDI Stadium between the St. Xavier Bombers and the La Salle Lancers. Despite getting out to a 10-0 lead, the Lancers could not hold back the Bombers offense for long before an offensive breakout led St. Xavier to a 24-13 win.
Following an interception of St. Xavier quarterback Chase Herbstreit and pulling off a fake punt, the Lancers got on the board first with a five-yard run by Devin Byrd. A Jack Schroer field goal extended the Lancer lead to 10-0 in the first quarter.
The Bombers wouldn’t get on the board until second before halftime when Jake Britt found the end zone on a 14-yard run to cut the La Salle lead to 10-7 going into halftime.
St. Xavier came out of the locker room with back-to-back scoring drives, led by another Britt scoring run and capped off by a Herbstreit scoring pass to Jack McClatchey. Both teams then swapped field goals in the fourth quarter before the final buzzer sounded with the score 24-13 in favor of the Bombers.
Both teams next will travel out of the area for their Week 9 games. St. Xavier will travel up north to take on St. Ignatius while the Lancers will head to Michigan to take on Detroit Central Catholic.
