The catalyst for Valley View (12-1) making its second consecutive regional finals appearance has been quarterback Caden Henson. The senior has thrown for 2,368 yards, run for 980 yards and accounted for 51 touchdowns (33 pass, 18 rush). That effort has earned Henson the 2023 Division V Southwest District Offensive Player of the Year. A Second Team All-Ohio selection as a junior, Henson has 101 touchdowns in his career (75 pass, 26 rush).
Purcell Marian (10-3) defensive back Jayonn Saunders has become one of the premier pickpockets in the Buckeye State. The junior snared nine interceptions (for a second straight season) and recorded 65 tackles (41 solo) with a pick-six helping the Cavaliers to their first league championship in the 21st century on his way to district defensive player of the year accolades. Like Henson, Saunders was a Division V Second Team All-Ohio honoree a year ago.
What a turnaround it has been at Waynesville (11-2). The Spartans lost their final seven contests of 2022 and the 2023 opener to Clinton-Massie but have gone 11-1 since and find themselves in the programs first ever regional finals under third-year head coach Ben Johnson. That performance has garnered Johnson coach of the year honors in the district.
