Cooper pulled off a big road upset, and Covington Catholic continued their great season in our NKY Round-up.

CLASS 5A

COOPER 17, HIGHLANDS 15
For the first time since 2012, the Cooper Jaguars are heading to the state finals. Cooper went into hostile territory and came away with a massive upset of host Highlands. The Jaguars used a fantastic defensive effort and some early offense to come away with the big win. Highlands had come into the game scoring over 40 points per game and had been a scoring machine over the past several weeks.

Cam O’Hara tossed two touchdown passes on the night. Austin Alexander was on the receiving end of both for the Jaguars. The defense was the story of the game however as they bottled down the Highlands offense all night. Cooper will play Bowling Green next week.

CLASS 4

COVINGTON CATHOLIC 22, PADUCAH TILGHMAN 14

The Covington Catholic Colonels will march on to the state championship after a come from behind win on Friday night. The Colonels found themselves trailing on their home field late in the contest and had to make several plays on both sides of the ball to come away with the win.

Braylon Miller scored a 38-yard rushing score for CovCath in the first half. It was their lone score of the half in a 7-7 tie. Evan Pitzer added a 2-yd rushing score late in the third and followed it up with a 14-yd rushing score with just over eight minutes remaining. The Colonels’ defense stepped up big late to aid in the victory. CovCath will face Boyle County for the championship next week.

CLASS 2A

MAYFIELD 31, BEECHWOOD 28
The Beechwood Tigers fell in heartbreaking fashion to Mayfield on Friday night. The game was an exciting affair that saw both squads make some incredible plays to give themselves a chance to win. In the end, the Cardinals capitalized on a 20-yd field goal as time expired to lift themselves to another state championship appearance.

Lincoln Suiter who missed a critical extra point in last season’s state title game, drilled the game winning kick for Mayfield.

Beechwood trailed by two scores before rallying to tie the game. Chase Flaherty scored two touchdowns on the night for the Tigers. Tyler Fryman added a score and Clay Hayden tossed a TD pass to Luke Erdman for the Beechwood scoring in the loss. Mayfield will play for a title for the 12th time in the last 15 seasons.
