2024 Snapshot: Badin
- Updated: July 8, 2024
The cost of winning has gotten quite pricey for Badin. The Rams who have won 38 consecutive regular season games, 22 straight conference battles (dating back to October 18th, 2019) and are on a quest for a sixth straight GCL Co-ed championship (fifth in a row outright) are getting bumped up to the incredibly challenging and brutally tough Division II, Region 8 for the 2024 campaign.
To make matters even worse for Badin, is having to replace 11 first and second team all-league performers from a year ago. “Our recent success has strengthened our team and the culture of our program. We have expectations year after year and our kids have bought in to what it takes to obtain those goals,” head coach Nick Yordy on what it means to play football for the Rams.
Yordy goes on. “We lost a lot of seniors and really good players from last year. We just need to replace them. This group of upcoming juniors and seniors are excited about their opportunity to leave their mark on our program. We are excited about this opportunity to prove ourselves.”
Despite the losses to graduation expect Badin to get after it defensively. Over the past four years, under Yordy’s guidance, the Rams are a combined 48-4 (19-0 GCL Co-ed). In that span, they have allowed just 9.8 points per game, 41 times opponents have scored 14 points or fewer, 24 have been held to seven points or less with 11 shutouts. Defense wins championships and Badin can attest to that.
Division II, Region 8
2023 RECORD: 13-1, 5-0 GCL Co-ed
COACH: Nick Yordy (69-17 at Badin, seven years; 69-17 overall)
HONOR ROLL
Royce Rachel, Sr, DL – A wrecking ball on the d-line who has all-state talent. Rachel is a two-time Second Team All-GCL Co-ed selection. He has 113 total tackles, 10.0 sacks, 17.0 tackles for losses and one interception in his career.
Lem Grayson, Jr, RB – In a conference loaded with outstanding running backs, Grayson may just be the best. He ran for 919 yards and 17 touchdowns on his way to Second Team All-GCL Co-ed accolades as a sophomore. Grayson just picked up his first offer, from Toledo.
OTHER RETURNEES
Ethan Kent, Sr, OL/D – The 6-foot-2, 290-pound Kent is the Rams leader in the trenches and only returning starter on both sides of the ball. Kent exploded defensively in 2023 recording 49 total tackles and three sacks. He looks to the form that saw him named Second Team All-GCL Co-ed as a sophomore.
Ben Sakach, Jr, TE/DE/P – Already an asset on special teams now Sakach looks to make his mark on offense and defense. He averaged 42.9 yards on 23 punts as a sophomore.
Jake Baker, Sr, TE – One of those seniors whose time has final come to shine. Baker could end up being a hidden gem for this team.
Trent Owens, Jr, H-back – Will see his role increase on offense and will be used mostly as a lead blocker.
Sam Von Hagen, Sr, OLB – There are big shoes to fill at linebacker and the coaching staff is confident Von Hagen can step in and fill some of that void. Von Hagen has 30 total tackles heading into his final season.
Kai Samples, Sr, DB – Will be the leader in the secondary. Samples had a bust out junior campaign with 54 total tackles and an interception.
Luke Campbell, Jr, DB – One of the few Rams that were starters as sophomores in 2023. Campbell finished with 14 total tackles.
NEWCOMERS
With so many open spots seniors QB Garrett Konesky, DL Roscoe Martin, DL Tristan Tincher, WR Xander Arnold, juniors WR/DB James Brink, OLB Alex Pate, WR Declan Brown, QB Colt Emerson along with sophomore RB/WR L.T. King all have excellent shots at cracking the starting lineup.
