2024 Snapshot: Miamisburg
- Updated: July 31, 2024
A move down to Division II, Region 8 from Division I, Region 2 gives Miamisburg a real shot at bringing home the school’s first ever regional title. The Vikings are equipped to hang with the best teams in Region 8. How this team handles being the hunted instead of the hunter will be one of the top stories to follow come November.
“Even though we graduated a strong senior class, we had a number of underclass players who contributed in 2023, who are returning for 2024. Our strength and speed continues to improve throughout the program. Strong freshmen and sophomore classes will help add depth,” head coach Lance Schneider states.
Schneider knows that his Vikings can’t get too far ahead of themselves and the hype that surrounds his team. They must take things one step at a time. “We will need to replace three offensive line starters. Among them are four-year starter and all-state player, Abel Ngoh, who heads to Kent State on a wrestling scholarship. We will also be replacing quarterback, Preston Barr, who was the 2023 GWOC Offensive Player of the Year, and defensive end Peyton Hoskins, who led the GWOC in sacks.”
Miamisburg hasn’t had back-to-back winning seasons since stringing together five in a row from 2012 to 2016. Look for the Vikings to end that streak and do some damage once the playoffs start.
Division II, Region 8
2023 RECORD: 8-4, 4-3 GWOC
COACH: Lance Schneider (23-28 at Miamisburg, five years; 130-91 overall, 21 years)
HONOR ROLL
Keith Henry, Sr, RB – A hard-nosed, tough-as-nails runner that coach Schneider loves to get the ball into his hands. Henry ran for 484 yards, had 34 receptions for 463 yards and found the end zone six times (four rush, two rec) to earn Second Team All-GWOC honors as a junior.
Colin Shannon, Sr, DB – In his first year as a starter Shannon emerged as one of the league’s top defensive backs as a junior. He was named Honorable Mention All-GWOC after recording 51 total tackles, three tackles for losses, five pass breakups and a fumble recovery. Shannon has picked up an offers from Defiance and Adrian College.
OTHER RETURNEES
Marshon Gregory-Bey, Sr, DE – Has really filled out this offseason and gained much notice on the camp circuit. This should be a breakout campaign for Gregory-Bey as a pass rusher. He had 17 total tackles as a junior. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound defensive end has picked up offers from Akron, BGSU, Eastern Kentucky, Kent State and Miami (OH).
Kevin McKinney, Sr, DL – Will have plenty of opportunities to be a disruptive force with all the double teams headed Gregory-Bey’s way. McKinney recorded 21 total tackles, two-and-a-half sacks and six tackles for losses as a junior.
Kevin Sewell, Sr, DB – A solid first season as a starter saw Sewell get in on 23 total tackles with four pass breakups and two interceptions last fall.
Mekai McDougald, Sr, DB – Always finds himself around the action on passes. McDougald was in on 17 total tackles with six pass breakups and two interceptions as a junior.
Tymarion Hunter, Sr, DB – One of four returning starters in a secondary that should be one of Vikings strengths this fall.
Noah Hartley, Sr, ILB – A healthy Hartley looks to leave his mark on the defense as a senior. He has 22 total tackles and a fumble recovery over the past two seasons.
Sam Keilholz, Sr, OL – A returning starter and leader of the of-line. The coaching staff is going to lean on Keilholz to guide the young and raw linemen.
J.J. Cook, So, OL – A pleasant surprise as a freshman, Cook is one of just two returning starters on the offensive line.
Hunter Derr, Sr, RB – Forms a great one-two punch with Henry out of the Vikings backfield. Derr ran for 372 yards, had 24 receptions for 206 yards with four rushing touchdowns in 2023.
Bryce Vaughn, Sr, TE – A gifted athlete who also stars in baseball, Vaughn will be a major factor in the offense. He had 16 receptions, 256 receiving yards and three touchdowns as a junior.
Landen Roberts, Sr, QB – Has big shoes to fill taking over for GWOC Offensive Player of the Year, Preston Barr. Roberts started the final three contests of 2023 going 2-1, including being under center for a playoff win. He threw for 464 yards, ran, for 96 yards and accounted for seven touchdowns (five pass, two rush) in seven games as a junior.
NEWCOMERS
Senior LB Darrien Anderson, juniors RB Kaden Schaller, slot Tamir Thomas as well as sophomores OL Lee Richardson and DB Jordin Clack are looking to bust into the starting lineup or rotation. Thomas showed electrifying skills as a return specialist with 198 return yards and a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown in limited action a year ago.
