NKY Round-Up: Ryle wins in OT

Things are getting very interesting in Northern Kentucky high school football action, including some huge games on the slate in Week 4.

NO. 13 RYLE 34, NO. 9 HIGHLANDS 28 OT
Ryle cleaned things up a bit after five turnovers a week ago and made enough big plays of their own to knock off a very good Highlands team in an overtime thriller.

The Raiders Dylan Lee picked off Highlands’ quarterback Rio Litmer on the first play of the extra frame and Jacob Savage put the nail in the coffin with a 10-yard rushing touchdown on the very next play to end the game. Savage finished the night with four TD runs to lead the way.

Both teams now move to 3-1 on the year. Ryle has scored 30-plus points in all three of their victories. Highlands suffered their first loss of the year as they gave up 34 points after ceding just 29 total points in their first three contests.

NO. 16 COVINGTON CATHOLIC 47, DIXIE HEIGHTS 28
The Battle of the Colonels continued to be lopsided as CovCath knocked off Dixie Heights for their 18th straight win in the series.

Quarterback Cash Harney accounted for five touchdowns in the road victory, including a beautiful 45-yard TD pass to Donovan Bradshaw late in the third quarter to open up CovCath’s lead to 40-19. Harney finished with 110 yards and a score through the air and picked up 173 yards and four TD’s on just seven carries.

The game was tight early and the two offenses took turns making highlight plays. Dixie Heights actually led the game a 21-19 in the second quarter, but the visitors would close out the contest by outsourcing the home team 28-7 the rest of the way.

CONNER 35, NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 14
The Cougars impressed on both sides of the ball versus an improved NewCath squad. Senior Wyatt Hatfield padded his total touchdown by running for four scores in the victory. He now has 10 rushing touchdowns through the season’s first four weeks.

Conner raced out to a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter, but after a costly fumble the Thoroughbreds were able to cut the lead in half with a 14-yard TD run by Kaleb Cole midway through the second quarter.

However, Hatfield answered the call on the following drive with a 40-yard TD run, his third of the half and Conner never looked back. The victory marks the third time in four contests that the Cougars broke the 35-point mark and gives the school its second straight 3-1 start to the season.
