Brookville wins OT upset thriller at CHCA
- Updated: November 2, 2024
CINCINNATI, Oh. – The vast majority of the first round of the Ohio high school football playoffs was chalk, with the higher-seeded squads victorious, often in blowouts.
The #13-seeded Brookville Blue Devils, however, flipped that script Friday night against #4-seeded Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy in their Ohio Division IV, Region 16 playoff opener with a thrilling 43-42 overtime victory over the Eagles.
The first half was an indication this would be a back and forth affair, with Blue Devils taking an 7-0 lead on RB Walt Adams 8-yard TD run. But the Eagles soared right back, knotting the score at 7 apiece with a 12-yard TD run by Griffin Ridner Richard.
Both teams went at each other again in the second quarter, with Brookville jumping to a 14-7 lead on a 2-yard touchdown run by Jake Lenser, then CHCA coming right back with a Brayden Mitchum 1-yard TD run. Walt Adams hit paydirt for the second time on the night for the Blue Devils, on a 51-yard TD bomb from quarterback Bayne Boston, but Ridner Richard would again tie the game for the Eagles, as he jet 65 yards for a touchdown to send it into halftime at 21 apiece.
CHCA would take their first lead of the game in the third quarter, as Mitchum scored from two yards out to make it 28-21. Brookville would knot it again early in the fourth quarter, with QB Boston running it in from five yards out. The Eagles would again go ahead, as Mitchum ripped off a 24-yard TD run to make it 35-28.
Brookville, however, would not go away, as RB Jake Lenser would tie it once again with a 1-yard TD plunge before the end of regulation, sending the game to overtime.
CHCA got possession to start the overtime, and promptly took the lead once more one a 20-yard TD pass from Ridner Richard to wideout Cooper Jepson. But, in tune with the back and forth nature of the game, Brookville came right back, scoring on a Boston 1-yard run to make it 42-41 CHCA, and went for the win instead of a second overtime, with Lenser scoring on the two-point conversion to give the Blue Devils the 43-42 victory.
Brookville’s backfield of Adams and Lenser would run for a combined 236 yards on 43 carries and three touchdowns to lead the Blue Devil’s upset.
CHCA’s season ends at 9-2, while Brookville improves to 7-4 and will visit #5 seeded Taft next Friday in the Ohio Division IV, Region 16 second round.
