Cincinnati Round-Up: Moeller handles Lakota East
- Updated: November 9, 2024
The second round of OHSAA playoff action featured some much more appealing matchups than a week ago, with several lower-seeded teams coming out on top on Friday night.
DIVISION I, REGION 4
NO. 1 MOELLER 55, NO. 8 LAKOTA EAST 28
The top-ranked Crusaders kept things rolling nicely in their second-round matchup as they knocked off the visiting Thunderhawks and eclipsed the 50-point mark for the third straight time with their 55-point effort here.
Moeller junior quarterback Matt Ponatoski had another huge night in the victory as he threw for 313 yards and five touchdowns on 16 of 21 passing. He has now etched his way into the OHSAA record list with the most passing touchdowns (44) in a season. Wide receiver Matthew Fogler was on the receiving end of two of the TD passes.
Big Moe raced out to a 28-0 lead, but Lakota East didn’t fold. The Thunderhawks fought back and got within 14 points at 35-21 midway through the third quarter. Moeller got their second wind through and pulled away late. With the win Moeller is set to face Princeton in next week’s regional semifinal.

NO. 2 LAKOTA WEST 20, NO. 7 ELDER 14
The Firebirds faced their toughest challenge since their Week 3 loss at Princeton as the Elder Panthers paid a visit to West Chester. The two teams battled all night long, but Lakota West would prevail in the end as they scored the go-ahead touchdown with just over two minutes left in the contest.
Sam Wiles broke a run for 23 yards and hit paydirt to give West the lead for good. The senior carried the Firebirds to a victory, rushing for all three scores and finishing with 125 yards on a game-high 20 carries. He also was 6-for-17 for 46 yards through the air.
Kaden Estep threw for 233 yards and a score and rushed for 20 yards and a score in the loss for the Panthers. Elder wideout Christopher Paff led all receivers with 124 yards and seven receptions.
Lakota West advances to take on St. Xavier next Friday in the regional semifinals.
NO. 4 PRINCETON 37, NO. 5 HAMILTON 7
After getting pummeled by the Big Blue 34-0 six weeks ago when they visited Hamilton, the Vikings got revenge in a big way when they welcomed their GMC foes to Vikings stadium in the second round of the playoffs.
Hamilton let things slip away right out of the gate when a botched snap on a punt led to safety and from there Princeton took off. On the ensuing possession classmates De’angelo Birch and Ryan O’Bryant connected on a 20-yard TD strike. Hamilton fumbled it right back when they got the ball back before WR Antonio Hunter, who played backup quarterback, threw a 25-yard TD pass to RB David Hambrick.

Teryntino Brown-Freeman provided a big spark for the Vikings as he ran for 203 yards and two touchdowns on 13 touches. Meanwhile, the Princeton D did its best to contain Hamilton’s GMC-leading running back Gracen Goldsmith, who still picked up an impressive 155 yards in the loss but was held out of the end zone for the first time since Week 3.
Less than five minutes into the contests Princeton scored three times and they never looked back. The only Hamilton score of the night came on a pick six in the second quarter as the Vikings advanced. Up next, Princeton will face top-ranked Moeller.
