2025 Snapshot: Milan

A big hurdle was leapt by Milan last fall when they beat North Decatur to win the school’s seventh sectional championship and first since 2016. The Indians had been knocked out of the playoffs in each of the previous five years by North Decatur. It was a huge victory to say the least and it catapults Milan’s confidence heading into this season.

Having been through those battles should make a squad that returns six starters on both offense and defense to be very focused on what lies ahead. Head coach Ryan Langferman knows several things have to happen for Milan to build upon last season’s success. “We have to continue to have a balanced attack on offense. We had 2,000 yards passing and 2,000 yards rushing in 2024. This will be the second season of our defense running the 3-4 and we look for improvement as our players become more familiar with the system.”

Langferman is also asking his younger Indians to step up. “We have some key spots to fill in the secondary due to graduation. Our running back position remains a question mark and our defense must improve from last season.” The Indians allowed 24.5 points per game and gave up 41 points or more on three occasions last fall.

It isn’t going to be easy to repeat last season’s playoff run. Milan is joining rival North Decatur in the Mid-Indiana Conference after several years as an independent. That means the two schools could face off twice. The front half of the schedule is loaded with the first four contests against teams that all had winning records in 2024. Then there is the potential matchup with reigning state champion Providence who bested the Indians twice in 2024 including in the regional title game. The opportunities are there for Milan to be special again, capitalizing on them is going to be the challenge.
