Covington Catholic bounced back in a big way Friday night, scoring the game’s first 42 points and rolling past Simon Kenton, 42-7.
After allowing 50 points in last week’s loss to No. 2 Elder, the No. 15 Colonels dominated from the start against a Simon Kenton team that entered the night 2-0 and had scored 76 points through its first two games.
Kiyan Miller powered the CovCath offense, rushing 11 times for 75 yards and three touchdowns. He scored twice in the opening quarter, on runs of 2 and 14 yards, as the Colonels jumped out to a 14-0 lead.
CovCath broke the game open in the second quarter.
Dylan Courtney connected with Jason Fedor for a 51-yard touchdown, then found Miller for a 30-yard score just before halftime. Miller also added his third rushing touchdown of the night from nine yards out as CovCath carried a commanding 34-0 advantage into the break.
The Colonels weren’t finished. Miller’s 9-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter pushed the margin to 40 points, with the conversion making it 42-0 before Simon Kenton finally got on the board on a 15-yard touchdown run by Kai Brewer.
Courtney was efficient through the air, completing 7-of-10 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns. Fedor caught two passes for 61 yards and a score, while Miller added two receptions for 45 yards and another touchdown.
CovCath finished with 338 total yards, averaging 7.0 yards per play. The Colonels rushed for 153 yards and threw for 185 while converting all three of their fourth-down attempts.
The defense was equally impressive. Simon Kenton managed just 138 total yards and 2.9 yards per play. The Pioneers were held to 67 passing yards and converted only 2-of-11 third downs.
Jonny Lind led CovCath with nine tackles, a sack and a tackle for loss, while Sam Miller added three tackles for loss. The Colonels also forced two turnovers.
Simon Kenton’s Grant Webb completed 11-of-22 passes for 67 yards and an interception. Brewer accounted for the Pioneers’ lone touchdown.
The victory moves No. 15 Covington Catholic to 2-1, while Simon Kenton falls to 2-1.
