Norman Powers Lakota West Past Mason

MASON, Ohio – Mason made No. 3 Lakota West work for it, but once Kenyon Norman and the Firebirds’ ground game got rolling, there was no stopping them.

Lakota West scored 28 unanswered points to erase a 10-7 third-quarter deficit and pull away from No. 21 Mason for a 35-10 road victory Friday night.

Mason struck first when Alex Nagel scored on a 20-yard run in the opening quarter. The Comets carried a 7-0 advantage into halftime before a field goal extended their lead to 10-7 in the third.

That’s when Norman took over.

The senior scored on an 8-yard run late in the third quarter to put West ahead 14-10, then added touchdown runs of 22 and 9 yards in the fourth. Jimmie Green capped the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run.

Norman finished with 212 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries, his second straight 200-yard performance after running for 262 yards and four scores against Lakota East a week ago. He has now piled up 590 rushing yards and nine touchdowns through three games.

The Firebirds did almost all of their damage on the ground, rushing for 271 yards on 37 carries while finishing with 296 total yards.

West’s defense also shut down Mason after the early success. The Comets were held to 200 total yards, including only 56 through the air, and converted just 4-of-11 third downs. Nagel led Mason with 99 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.

The victory moves Lakota West to 3-0 and gives the Firebirds consecutive wins over ranked GMC opponents after last week’s 48-18 victory over No. 8 Lakota East.
