INDEPENDENCE, Ky. – Neither a lengthy weather delay nor Conner could slow Simon Kenton on Homecoming night.
The Pioneers scored 20 points in the second quarter and returned from a nearly two-hour lightning delay without missing a beat, rolling to a 47-0 victory over the Cougars at Chlorine Menefee Stadium.
Simon Kenton (3-2) finished with 381 yards of offense while averaging 8.6 yards per play. The Pioneers were equally impressive defensively, limiting Conner (1-4) to just 126 total yards and forcing two turnovers.
After a scoreless opening quarter, Peyton Testerman got Simon Kenton moving with a 1-yard touchdown run early in the second. The junior struck again from 2 yards out and added the two-point conversion to make it 14-0.
Quarterback Grant Webb then connected with Forest Hughes for a 12-yard touchdown with 33 seconds remaining in the half, sending the Pioneers into Homecoming festivities with a 20-0 advantage.
Then came the wait.
Lightning delayed the start of the second half for nearly two hours, stretching the game to more than four hours from start to finish. When the teams finally returned to the field, Simon Kenton quickly showed the interruption had done little to cool its offense.
Mo Smith scored on a 2-yard run before Webb found Hughes again, this time for an 11-yard touchdown that pushed the lead to 33-0.
Webb finished an efficient 13-of-21 passing for 196 yards and three touchdowns. Hughes was his top target, catching five passes for 43 yards and two scores.
The Pioneers triggered the running clock in the fourth quarter when Webb connected with Brandon Lofties for a 24-yard touchdown. Backup quarterback Ethan Hopkins finished the scoring with a 28-yard touchdown run.
Simon Kenton also rushed for 185 yards as part of its balanced offensive performance.
The Pioneers’ defense made sure Conner never mounted a comeback. The Cougars managed only 126 yards on 56 plays, with Michael Newborn recording an interception and Shawn Kata recovering a fumble as Simon Kenton earned its first shutout of the season.
Simon Kenton will look to build on the Homecoming victory next week, while Conner returns home to open district play against Cooper.
