Northern Kentucky: Five Things to Watch in Week 10

District play wraps up in Northern Kentucky this coming week, and there is plenty left to settle before the postseason begins. District championships, playoff positioning, undefeated records and a few intriguing rivalries will take center stage Friday night.

Here are five storylines to watch as teams prepare for Week 10.

1. Ryle, Simon Kenton battle for district supremacy

A Class 6A district championship will be on the line when Ryle visits Simon Kenton. The Pioneers (4-4) are coming off a dramatic 13-12 victory over Campbell County, while the Raiders have won three straight meetings in this rivalry.

Simon Kenton’s biggest question surrounds quarterback Grant Webb, who exited last week’s game with an injury. Freshman Ethan Hopkins stepped in and delivered the winning 30-yard touchdown pass to Forest Hughes. Sophomore Jackson Ober added two critical interceptions.

Ryle enters with momentum following a 27-6 victory over Great Crossing, its third straight game allowing six points or fewer.

2. Holy Cross looks to finish the job

Holy Cross (6-2) can secure a Class 1A district championship with a victory over Ludlow.

The Indians dominated Trimble County 49-6 in Week 9, scoring 42 first-half points. Quarterback Brian Ferguson accounted for three touchdowns, while Charles Oglesby rushed for 129 yards and a score.

Ludlow (5-3) is looking to rebound from a 26-17 loss to Bishop Brossart. The Panthers have plenty at stake in the district standings, making this an important matchup for both programs.

3. Dayton, Newport fight for playoff positioning

A week ago, Dayton was unbeaten and riding high. That changed dramatically when Newport Central Catholic handed the Greendevils a 47-7 defeat.

Now Dayton (7-1) must regroup against Newport with second place in Class 1A, District 3 and a home playoff game at stake.

Newport brings its own momentum following a 36-13 victory over Bellevue. Davae Andrews-Glover was outstanding, rushing for 192 yards and three touchdowns while also throwing two scoring passes.

4. Can Highlands keep rolling?

Highlands (7-2) has been impressive offensively, and sophomore quarterback Bryce Armstrong continues to develop into one of Northern Kentucky’s most dangerous playmakers.

Armstrong completed 11-of-13 passes for 272 yards and five touchdowns in last week’s 61-0 rout of Mason County.

The Bluebirds face Scott County in their regular-season finale, looking to build momentum before another anticipated postseason run.

5. Can Beechwood carry perfection into November?

While several previously unbeaten teams fell in Week 9, Beechwood kept rolling.

The Tigers improved to 8-0 with a 69-0 victory over Gallatin County, completing a dominant stretch of district play in which they outscored four opponents by a combined 237-7.

Beechwood has established itself as one of Northern Kentucky’s most imposing teams. Now the challenge is maintaining that level of execution as the postseason approaches.

With district titles and playoff opportunities still hanging in the balance, Northern Kentucky’s final regular-season Friday promises plenty of intrigue.
