It took much longer than expected to get there, but Simon Kenton eventually put the finishing touches on a dominant Homecoming victory Friday night.
After a scoreless opening quarter and a lengthy lightning delay that interrupted the game at halftime, the Pioneers rolled past Conner, 47-0, at Chlorine Menefee Stadium.
Simon Kenton (3-2) broke through early in the second quarter when Peyton Testerman scored on a 1-yard run. Testerman found the end zone again from two yards out with three minutes remaining in the half, then ran in the two-point conversion to extend the lead to 14-0.
The Pioneers weren’t finished.
Grant Webb connected with Forest Hughes in the back of the end zone for a touchdown with 33 seconds remaining, sending Simon Kenton into halftime with a 20-0 advantage.
Then came the wait.
Lightning delayed the start of the second half for an extended period, but the interruption did little to slow the Pioneers once the teams finally returned to the field.
Mo Smith scored on a 5-yard run with 8:15 remaining in the third quarter to push the advantage to 26-0. Webb and Hughes connected again just a few minutes later, this time on a 15-yard touchdown pass that made it 33-0.
Simon Kenton continued to pull away in the fourth quarter. Webb threw his third touchdown of the night when he found Brandon Lofties from 30 yards out, extending the lead to 40-0.
Ethan Hopkins provided the final score, breaking free for a 30-yard touchdown run with 3:42 remaining.
While Simon Kenton’s offense eventually produced seven touchdowns, the Pioneers’ defense was equally impressive. Conner (1-4) was held scoreless from start to finish as Simon Kenton completed the shutout despite a night interrupted for hours by weather.
Webb finished with three touchdown passes, including two to Hughes. Testerman scored twice on the ground, while Smith and Hopkins added rushing touchdowns.
After waiting out the weather, Simon Kenton finally walked off its home field with a convincing 47-point victory and a Homecoming shutout.
