Best Bets: Dayton – Week 4

A pair of great matchups highlight this week’s action in the Dayton-area. The Greater Catholic league kicks off league play with a pair of unbeaten going at it. Alter travels to Bishop Fenwick in a game that could be the precursor to a potential playoff rematch.

Trotwood-Madison is out of the gate strong. The Rams will not be in awe of a larger Centerville squad that has struggled on defense. The Elks hope last Friday’s win over Lebanon was just the beginning of good things ahead.

Here is a look at the Best Bets for Dayton this weekend.

Alter (3-0) at Bishop Fenwick (3-0) – Defense wins championships and there aren’t two teams playing it any better than these squads. Bishop Fenwick has two shutouts and only allowed eight points on the year. Fenwick brings the heat. The Falcons have 14 sacks. Ben Hinton has registered a team high five and a half sacks.

Alter has allowed just one touchdown in its last nine quarters on the field. The Knights wear teams down with a rushing attack that has gained 1,003 yards and scored 14 touchdowns in three outings. The ground game is led by running back Andy Turpin (330), quarterback Ryan Markoff (233) and running back Holden Rushing (208) have combined for 771 yards and 12 scores.

This affair has huge Division IV, Region 14 implications. It could mean the difference between hosting or not hosting a first round playoff game. Alter has wins over Division I Fairmont and Division II Withrow. Bishop Fenwick has beater Division II Anderson and Division III Mount Healthy.

Trotwood-Madison (3-0) at Centerville (1-2) – Trotwood-Madison has not missed beat under head coach Jeff Graham. The Division III Rams will be looking for their third victory in four games over a Division I squad. This program does not back down from anyone. Centerville got a much need win over Lebanon. A win over Trotwood-Madison would put the Elks right back in the middle of the playoff picture. Sophomore Raveion Hargrove has 630 yards and seven touchdowns for the Rams. He is a bad matchup for the Elks defense that is allowing 281 yards and four rushing touchdowns per contest.

Springboro (2-1) at Beavercreek (3-0) – It has been a great start to the season for Division I Beavercreek who has amassed three wins versus smaller division schools. The Battlin’ Beavers take a step up in class this week. They must find a way to keep a potent Springboro squad from putting points on the board. Beavercreek’s running game with Tim Bradshaw and Hunter Maloney benefits greatly the lower the score is in this affair.

Miamisburg (3-0) at Springfield (1-2) – This is a huge game for Springfield. The Wildcats haven’t performed anywhere close to the talent they have. The Springfield defense will be put to the test trying to stop a Miamisburg offense that averages 320 yards and four rushing touchdowns per game. The Vikings offensive line led by junior Josh Myers can take over and dominate a game up front. The Wildcats have to show the toughness that keeps that from happening if they are to even their record.

Benjamin Logan (2-1) at Tippecanoe (3-0) – This CBC crossover features two teams that go about putting droves of points on the scoreboard in contrasting styles. Benjamin Logan is racking up 441.3 yards and 45 points per contest in its spread offense. Raiders’ receivers Jarret Mathews has 16 receptions for 385 yards (24.1/rec.) and eight touchdowns. Teammate Josh Whitten has 14 receptions for 334 yards (23.9/rec.) and two touchdowns. Tippecanoe pounds the football averaging 41.3 points and 417 yards rushing per game. Red Devils are led by a trio of runners who averaging more than 10 yards per carry. Jakob Prall has 417 yards (14.4/carry) and four touchdowns, Cameron Gibbs has run for 404 yards (16.8/carry) with six scores while Chris Garber has posted 252 yards (10.5/carry) with a trip to the end zone.
