The Compilation Top 25 turnstile

Like the a kid at a hotel for the first time, the bottom of the Media Compilation Top 25 is a revolving door that teams just can’t get enough of.

Four of the five teams that broke into the poll last week are checking out early with only Bergen Catholic (Oradell, NJ) remaining after exacting some measure of revenge against St. Peter’s Prep (Jersey City, NJ), 47-14.

Past Media Compilations:

The other four teams that came in with the Crusaders all took a loss and a tumble out of the poll. Two of those four that fell were replaced by those that came out the victor.

Additionally, the fifth team to fall, previous No. 15 Archer (Lawrenceville, GA) will also see its position filled by the team that knocked it from the rankings as Grayson (Loganville, GA) enters at No. 25 following a 26-24 win in the final seconds.

Previous No. 22 Colerain (Cincinnati, OH) was beaten in overtime by La Salle (Cincinnati, OH) to the tune of 39-36. As such, the Lancers climb from just outside the rankings to the No. 19 spot this week.

Louisville Trinity (KY) was in the compilation for one week after its hot start with a No. 24t placement but after suffering its third-worst loss in the last two decades at the hands of Male (Louisville, KY) the Bulldogs come in at No. 23.

A second Georgia team was replaced with McEachern (Powder Springs, GA) losing its No. 16 rankings as it turned the ball over twice inside its opponents five, threw a pick six, and allowed a safety in a 9-6 loss. It is replaced at No. 20 by Rummel (Metairie, LA).

Finally, St. Edward (Lakewood, OH) only had one week in the poll as it fell to St. Joseph (Montvale, NJ) in a tough pairing, 22-20. The top team from Oklahoma — Jenks (OK) — played its way in with a rout of archrival Union (Tulsa, OK) in the Backyard Bowl.

Baring a major upset it could be a little more comfortable for Jenks, Male, and Grayson until the playoffs. Rummel and La Salle each have major contest in front of them in the next few weeks making the footing a little less firm.

The Media Compilation takes into account the four most respected human polls, the top computer model, and an emerging hybrid human-algorithm to make for the best rankings in the country.

Those under consideration are the NationalHSFootball.com HSFB100; USAToday Super 25; MaxPreps Xcellent25; PrepNation Top 25; Jeff Fisher’s Top 25 and the Freeman Computer Top 25.

For a mathematically sound compilation each team is given points from 40 to 16 for being inside the Top 25 of each of those six polls with no points awarded for any additional rankings due to the differing size of each poll.

Points are assigned in decreasing value starting with 40 being awarded for No. 1 and on down to 16 for No. 25 which will result in a more accurate representation of the polls. Assigning points starting at 1 point would skew the tally in the instance that a team received a single, high placement versus a team with lower placements in multiple polls, raising the baseline eliminates the outlier impact in the compilation.

The poll will be updated and released each Tuesday of the football season.

No. (LW) PTS

TEAM (ST)

HSFB USAT MAX PN JFAM CPU
1 (1)

237

Bishop Gorman (NV) 2 1 1 2 2 1
Bishop Gorman was completely unchanged in any poll as it bettered a down Bellevue (WA) team. The Wing-T was easily solved and the Wolverines did not have an answer for the Gorman offensive attack. The Gaels have an intriguing game against Long Beach Poly (CA) this week and another with Don Bosco (Ramsey, NJ) late in the season. Those two should be a test for the offense but neither have looked like a threat on offense in the early going.
2 (2)

228

Aquinas (FL) 3 2 2 3 5 3
Aquinas defeated Plantation this week in a ‘check the box’ game for the superiorly talented Raiders. The win didn’t cost Aquinas a spot in any of the human polls but the Freeman Computer slid it down one spot behind IMG. A road game at Hallandale (FL) could be of interest as well as a season-ending game with Flanagan (Pembroke Pines, FL). Until now the team has hardly been tested.
3 (3)

221

Centennial (CA) 6 3 3 4 3 6
The Huskies started out slowly but eventually pulled away from Orange Lutheran (CA) in a 35-14 win. The rest of its schedule is not much more than a heat check for when it goes into the playoffs. Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, CA) has already lost two games and rivals Norco (CA) will be measured this week. Centennial could turn into a buoy.
4 (4)

220

DeMatha (MD) 4 4 4 6 4 4
DeMatha was idle this week and did not flinch with a single poll staying the course or nearly No. 4 across the board. It was a good time for a break as the team was banged up after two hard-fought wins.
5 (5)

215

Allen (TX) 7 6 5 7 1 5
Allen, like those ahead of it, didn’t budge this week as it checked the box in another blowout win. The big news from the program is that it appears to have made the switch to four-star, dual-threat quarterback Seth Green — who transfered in during the offseason from Minnesota. Green passed for 200-plus yards and ran for over 100, too.
6 (7)

208

St. John Bosco (CA) 1 5 7 1 6 18
The Braves went to Oregon and blew out Portland Central Catholic. It gained two spots in the MaxPreps 25 and jumped into the Freeman Computer from the outside to No. 18 allowing it to move ahead of Colquitt County. The strength of schedule keeps taking hits with Central Catholic and Crespi losing the week before as well as St. Peter’s Prep, Servite, and Orange Lutheran getting blownout.
7 (6)

193

Colquitt County (GA) 5 7 6 5 8 22
Colquitt gained a single point in the Freeman Computer model accounting for its lone gain. The Packers crushed Enterprise (AL) as its quarterback to reciever combo of Chase Parrish and Kiel Pollard moved up the all-time Colquit County record books for touchdowns. Region 1-6A play is coming soon.
8 (9)

162

IMG Academy (FL) 10 12 19 13 16 2
IMG got a few spots in every poll — with the exception of the HSFB100 — after it flexed its muscle in a game against Cocoa (FL). The USAToday reacted the most with a five-point move for the Ascenders, although it was also the only poll to view the game as an upset as it had Cocoa ranked No. 12 last week, ahead of IMG.
9 (8)

173

Trinity (TX) 12 13 15 10 7 16
Trinity slid in most polls this week after a lackluster win against Lancaster (TX). The Trojans had a sandwich of less-than-interesting games between bettering De La Salle and its coming contest against North Shore (Houston, TX). There will be more eyes on the evaluation points of the team this week.
10 (13)

167

Cedar Hill (TX) 8 11 17 8 12 23
The Longhorns beat a Dallas Skyline team that was on the receiving votes line of the poll this week, 20-10. The win moved the team into the Freeman Computer poll and up five spots on MaxPreps. The USAToday was less impressed and slid the Longhorns back three spots making it the lone poll moving the team in a negative direction.
11 (11)

153

Ocean Lakes (VA) 11 8 9 11 13
Ocean Lakes will be the ultimate buoy the rest of this season as there isn’t a team on the slate that is going to down the Dolphins until deep in the playoffs. It has blanked its last two foes, 125-0. It is hard to know what to make of this team with those results.
12 (14)

139

Spartanburg (SC) 14 19 11 14 23 17
The Vikings rolled Gaffney this week with a 41-14 beating. The USAToday, again, provided the biggest gain as it moved the team up five spots. The USAToday lost six teams from its previous rankings and so it afforded it more places. The other four human polls slid Spartanburg up one spot after the win.
13 (10)

137

Katy (TX) 20 14 10 15 9
Both the HSFB100 and PrepNation 25 took major steps back on the Tigers after a 14-7 victory over The Woodlands. The HSFB100 slid the team back nine spots making it the lowest human poll on the team at No. 20 after opening the season as the highest with Katy in the Top 5. PrepNation dropped the team six spots, MaxPreps dipped two.
14 (23)

136

Bergen Catholic (NJ) 24 18 20 20 20 8
Bergen Catholic looked quite impressive jumping out to an early, massive lead over St. Peter’s Prep and then respectfully backing off and coasting to a finish. The win made the team a unanimous selection with the HSFB100 going from unranked to No. 24 and the USAToday moving the team from the outside to No. 18. It slid up five spots at MaxPreps as well as PrepNation and added four in the Fisher Algorithm. The Freeman Computer jumped it up seven spots.
15 (18)

134

American Heritage (FL) 9 10 18 9 25
American Heritage gained big points this week after it jumped into the bottom of the Fisher Algorithm and slid up six vacated spots in the USAToday 25. The Patriots will have two interesting district games coming up that can boost it higher.
16 (12)

133

De La Salle (CA) 13 15 21 12 11
The drop from No. 19 to the outside of the Freeman Computer caused the team to take a big step backwards this week even as it blew out Servite, 52-15. The USAToday was the only other poll to react as it moved the team up the five spots that were cleared out in front of the Spartans.
17 (21)

121

South Panola (MS) 23 14 24 14 9
The Tigers gained entrance to the HSFB100 and PrepNation polls at No. 23 and 24, respectively, as each poll had four spots to fill. There is rumblings that the Tigers are benefigiting from inheritance placement as it has not has an impressive offensive showing on the season despite bettering several quality Mississippi teams.
18 (17)

119

Clay-Chalkville (AL) 9 16 17 19 25
The Cougars kept their place in the five polls that have it ranked and moved up in the HSFB100 but is still not in striking distance of that Top 25. The team looked more the part of a contender than it did the week previous. It was a check the box victory and the polls did not react.
19 (–)

118

La Salle (OH) 22 25 23 10 7
La Salle was a rpedictable entrant this week as it beat Colerain to take the Cardinals spot and jump from the recieving votes into the poll. The two computer polls are reacting more favorably to the results as each gives weight to secondary points. The humans are likely waiting to see what La Salle does against St. Xavier to make a bigger move.
20 (–)

115

Rummel (LA) 16 24 13 16 21
Suffice it to say this ranking is meaningless if the team can not get through the month. It downed a quality ULab team to open the season and easily bettered Covington this last week. It has a road game in Mississippi — the first time the program has gone further than three hours from New Orleans — and then hops a plane to take on Don Bosco in New Jersey.
21 (19)

108

Mater Dei (CA) 15 18 13 10
Mater Dei was solid again and got a major boost from the HSFB100 as it elevated the Monarchs six spots to No. 15. Freshman quarterback JT Daniels will soon be described by more as a special player once he gets onto the radar. Bright days are ahead for this team with him at the helm and a strong defense on the other side of the ball.
22 (20)

86

Mainland (FL) 22 12 22 17
Mainland was nearly unchanged in the four polls that have it ranked, gaining marginal points in two after beating Flagler Palm Coast. It has two interesting road dates coming up as it will play Dr. Phillips in Orlando and then fly to Ohio for a game with St. Edward — which will be a measuring stick for a lot of teams this year.
23 (–)

77

Male (KY) 19 23 24 21
What happens when you hand a nationally ranked team and former national champion its third-worst beating in 20-years? You take its place in most polls. Male played fully healthy for the first time all year and crushed Trinity, smothering it in the second half and pulling away with a balanced offensive attack.
24 (–)

67

Jenks (OK) 20 25 11
Jenks put it on Union in the Backyard Bowl and after winning four-straight state titles the Trojans appear to be running away with the lead in the state. It doesn’t have much meat left on the bone with Owasso and Broken Arrow before the playoffs. BA blanked Owasso and got a win in Texas versus Coppell. It plays Union this week and that could make the game more meaningful.
25 (–)

64

Grayson (GA) 17 23 19
Grayson took out previous-No. 15 Archer with a field goal in the closing seconds and took a spot in the media poll as a result. Archer had been in five polls but Grayson only landed three. Neither computer was in on the team although that is no shock as both have historically been tough on the Peach State.
Dropped From the Media Compilation Top 25:
Previous No. 15 Archer (Lawrenceville, GA); No. 16 McEachern (Powder Springs, GA); No. 22 Colerain (Cincinnati, OH); No. 24t Louisville Trinity (KY), and No. 24t St. Edward (Lakewood, OH).

Flanagan (58); Chandler (49); Center Grove (49); Westfield (47); St. Joseph Regional (46); Webb City (24); Cibolo Steele (23); Huber Heights Wayne (22); Long Beach Poly (21); Pittsburgh Central Catholic (19); Byrnes (19); Lake Taylor (17); St. Edward (17); Saline (16), and Archer (16).

Arlington Martin (TX); Bishop Amat (La Puente, CA); Christian Brother (St. Louis, MO); St. Xavier (Cincinnati, OH); Cocoa (FL); Colerain; Dallas Skyline (TX); Louisville Trinity, and McEachern.
