COLUMBUS, Ohio: Badin found plenty of different ways to score Friday night, using big plays on special teams, a strong defensive effort and an explosive offense to roll past Bishop Hartley, 46-13, at Jack Ryan Field.
The Rams improved to 4-0 for the sixth time in the last seven seasons and continued their impressive start heading into a Week 5 showdown with No. 13 La Salle.
Badin’s night actually started with adversity when Davis Martin was intercepted by Camden Caldwell on the Rams’ first offensive play. The defense immediately answered, eventually tackling a Hartley ball carrier in the end zone for a safety and a 2-0 lead.
Then Cooper Clay took over on special teams.
Following the safety, Clay returned the ensuing free kick 62 yards for a touchdown to make it 8-0. Hartley responded after Caldwell’s second interception set up a touchdown to cut the margin to 8-6, but Clay immediately struck again, taking the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for another touchdown.
Just like that, Badin led 15-6 despite its offense having yet to find the end zone.
The Rams took control offensively in the second quarter. Chase Even scored on a 1-yard run before Martin connected with Hudson Heid for a 31-yard touchdown, pushing the advantage to 29-6.
Badin wasn’t finished before halftime, eventually taking a commanding 39-6 advantage into the locker room and triggering a running clock to begin the second half.
The Rams’ defense kept Hartley off the scoreboard throughout the third quarter before Mario Wisdom’s 4-yard touchdown run made it 46-6 with 6:58 remaining in the game.
Hartley added its final touchdown late when Danilo Giardino connected with Isaac King for an 80-yard score, but the outcome had long since been decided.
Badin has now outscored its first four opponents 152-40 while opening the season 4-0. After victories over Hamilton, Dixie Heights, Edgewood and Hartley, the schedule takes another significant step up next Friday when the Rams host No. 13 La Salle.
The victory also extended Badin’s winning streak against Hartley to five straight games and gave the Rams an 8-2 advantage in the series.
